Križanke Summer Theatre

Križanke is a former Teutonic Knights’ monastery at French Revolution Square in central Ljubljana, remade by Jože Plečnik as a cultural complex and summer theatre.

What Križanke is

Križanke is a layered architectural complex at Trg francoske revolucije 1, on the south-west edge of Ljubljana’s old centre. Its core is a former monastery of the Teutonic Order, whose presence here dates to the 13th century. Jože Plečnik adapted the ageing complex between 1952 and 1956 for cultural use; it was his last major Ljubljana project.

Today it is both a protected monument and a working performance venue. The Summer Theatre hosts concerts and festival events, while other spaces handle chamber performances, exhibitions and smaller gatherings.

Read the architecture

Plečnik did not erase the older fabric. Look for his deliberate additions to the monastery’s courtyards and walls:

  • Grand Foyer and Pergola: shallow arcade openings, coloured sgraffito and a raised colonnade turn the courtyard into an architectural stage.
  • Hell’s Courtyard: a compact performance court with a grid of lamps set into its walls; it was designed for chamber events.
  • Knights’ Hall: the former refectory, later adapted as an indoor hall.
  • Summer Theatre: the large auditorium occupies the former monastery garden. Anton Bitenc and Viktor Molka completed this part after Plečnik’s death.

The baroque Church of Our Lady, Help of Christians, beside the complex, was built in 1714–15 to designs by Domenico Rossi. It is part of the ensemble but is not open to tourists.

Visiting the complex

Križanke is not an all-day walk-in monument: it functions as a school and an active venue. The Ljubljana Festival offers architectural visits on working days from 10:00 to 15:00, covering the Foyer, Pergola, Summer Theatre, Hell’s Courtyard and Knights’ Hall. These visits require advance arrangement at least three working days ahead and carry a small admission charge.

For an evening performance, entry, timing and access follow the individual event ticket. The Summer Theatre is one of the principal venues of the Ljubljana Festival; programming ranges across concert and performing-arts formats.

Getting there and access

The complex is a short walk from Congress Square and the riverside centre. Use the Križanke bus stop for lines 2, 3, 3B, 3G, 11, 11B and 27; the Drama stop is another nearby option. The closest BicikeLJ stations are NUK 2–FF on Zoisova cesta and Breg.

There is a designated accessible route from public transport and parking, an accessible entrance and toilets, and accessible event-space provision. Road access around Zoisova cesta can be restricted during major events, so arrive on foot, by bike or public transport when attending an evening show.
