Rožnik Hill

Rožnik is the wooded hill rising directly above Tivoli Park in Ljubljana. Its accessible focal point is Cankar’s Peak, a 394-metre lookout with a church, an inn and literary connections.

What Rožnik is

Rožnik is Ljubljana’s forested city hill, part of the Tivoli–Rožnik–Šiška Hill Landscape Park. It begins where Tivoli’s formal parkland gives way to gravel tracks and woodland, making it an easy nature break without leaving the city.

The most practical destination is Cankar’s Peak (Cankarjev vrh), 394 m. Do not confuse it with the highest point in the wider Rožnik area: Šiška Hill, at 429 m, lies farther northeast. The coordinates for this page mark Rožnik’s 393-metre peak.

The standard walk from Tivoli

Start at Tivoli Castle, at the western end of the Jakopič Promenade. A broad macadam path climbs gently through the trees to Cankar’s Peak; it is an easy, well-used route rather than a mountain hike.

  • Distance: 2.7 km
  • Time: about one hour
  • Ascent: 94 m
  • Surface: mainly gravel road and forest paths

From central Ljubljana, walk through Tivoli along the Jakopič Promenade to reach the start. The gradual approach is useful for a short walk before or after exploring the city centre.

Cankar’s Peak: church, writer and view

The summit area centres on Gostilna Rožnik and the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which stands just above it. The churchyard area opens toward Ljubljana and gives the hill its clearest city-facing viewpoint.

The peak is named for the Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar, who lived here from 1910 to 1917 in the building now occupied by the inn. A memorial room and his bust preserve that association. This is a compact stop, not a museum district: combine the church exterior, viewpoint and memorial features with the walk.

Extend or return

For the simplest outing, return to Tivoli by the same route. For a loop, go past the church, take the narrower gravel path to the signposts, then follow signs for Tivoli down a broad winding track toward Rožna Dolina and back into the park.

Rožnik has a denser network of paths than the main route suggests. The Jesenko educational trail runs for about 3 km and identifies 30 tree and shrub species. Keep to marked or established paths: the hill is both a heavily used recreation area and part of a protected landscape park.

Practical footing

The climb is gentle, but gravel can be loose and forest paths become slick after rain. Wear shoes with grip rather than city soles. Tivoli’s promenade is level; the hill section beyond Tivoli Castle is not designed for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
