Trnovo, Ljubljana

Trnovo is a historic neighbourhood on the left bank of the Ljubljanica, southwest of Ljubljana Castle. It is the southern anchor of Jože Plečnik’s Ljubljana, centred on the architect’s former home, Trnovo Bridge and the river embankment.

Why go

Trnovo is where Plečnik’s urban ideas become intimate. The Slovene architect lived and worked here from 1921 until his death in 1957; his home is now a museum. Rather than a single monument, the neighbourhood rewards attention to the relationship between house, garden, church, bridge and water.

This is a residential quarter, not a museum precinct. Keep the visit focused on the public spaces and the Plečnik House complex.

Start at Plečnik House

Plečnik House, at Karunova 4–6, combines two older houses with the architect’s distinctive cylindrical annexe, garden and conservatory. The permanent exhibition sets his Ljubljana work alongside projects from Vienna and Prague; original furnishings, personal objects, models and drawings give the place its real value.

Important: entry to Plečnik’s preserved private home is by guided tour only. Public tours run on the hour and are limited to seven people. The small capacity makes this the one Trnovo stop to arrange before setting out.

Trnovo Bridge and the church

Walk north along Karunova Street to Trnovo Bridge. Built in 1929–32 over the Gradaščica, it is an unusual bridge-as-square: hefty stone balustrades, short columns, a statue of St John the Baptist and two planted rows of birches turn a crossing into a civic room.

The Church of St John the Baptist stands directly beyond it. Read bridge and church together: the bridge’s trees and masonry deliberately frame the church frontage rather than treating the waterway as a back edge.

Follow the water

From the bridge, take the Ljubljanica-side route to Trnovski pristan. Plečnik shaped this embankment with broad stone steps descending toward the river. It is best understood on foot, at a slow pace, looking back toward the bridge and across the water to Krakovo.

The embankment is part of the wider sequence of Plečnik-designed public spaces that gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. Continue north for the architectural thread into the old centre: Cobblers’ Bridge, the National and University Library, the market and Triple Bridge follow as a coherent, walkable sequence.

Getting here and around

Trnovo lies southwest of the old centre, on the left bank of the Ljubljanica. Arrive on foot from the centre or use city bus 2, which links the centre and Trnovo. Within the neighbourhood, walking is the right scale; Karunova Street, the bridge and the embankment are close together.

Wear shoes suitable for stone paving and steps, especially if continuing along the wider Plečnik route.
