Know the layout

Central Market is not one hall. Its open-air stalls occupy Vodnikov trg, Pogačarjev trg and Dolničarjeva ulica; the covered market is in the ground floor of the Seminary Palace at Pogačarjev trg 1. Along the river, Plečnik’s Covered Market runs through the arcades at Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje.

This compact arrangement makes the market an easy stop between the Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge. Start on Vodnikov trg for the outdoor stalls, cross through the covered section, then follow the colonnade beside the Ljubljanica.

What to buy

The outdoor market is for fresh produce and plants: local fruit and vegetables, flowers, seedlings and dry-cured meat products. Selection follows the season, so arrive with an open list rather than hunting for a fixed item.

Inside the Seminary Palace, look for:

• Bread, biscuits and pastries
• Cheese, cured meats and fresh meat
• Dried fruit, nuts, olive oil and pumpkin-seed oil

The lower level of the riverside market contains the fish market. The upper level has small shops selling Slovenian products as well as cafés and other food businesses.

Plečnik’s river market

The architectural reason to linger is Jože Plečnik’s covered market, built between 1940 and 1944. He made it a two-storey sequence of halls that follows the river bend rather than ignoring it: large semicircular windows face the water, while a long colonnade faces the market side.

Walk beneath the columns and use the open loggias to look across the Ljubljanica. The market building is part of the protected Plečnik ensemble between the Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge, but it remains a practical commercial space rather than a museum piece.

Hours and timing

For the fullest choice, go in the morning. The outdoor market operates from 06:00: in summer, weekdays until 18:00 and Saturday until 16:00; in winter, Monday to Saturday until 16:00. The covered market and Plečnik’s arcades generally run Monday to Friday 07:00–16:00 and Saturday 07:00–14:00.

The regular market is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Individual traders set their own hours within those operating windows, so do not leave food shopping until late afternoon.

Friday and Saturday

On Fridays from mid-March to the end of October, Pogačarjev trg hosts Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen), a separate street-food event where restaurant cooks prepare dishes on site. It is cancelled in bad weather.

Saturday brings the Ecological Market to Pogačarjev trg. For ordinary market shopping, use the open squares first; for a sheltered route in rain, move under Plečnik’s colonnade.
