Yeongdo Island

Orientation

Yeongdo lies across the water from Nampo-dong and Jagalchi, but it feels distinct from central Busan: steep residential slopes, ship-repair yards, port infrastructure and exposed coastline share a compact island. Its old name, Jeolyeongdo, referred to horses said to outrun their shadows.

The island is best treated as three separate zones: the bridge and harbor edge in the north, Huinnyeoul on the west coast, and Taejongdae at the southern tip. Do not expect to cover them all quickly on foot.

Start at the harbor edge

Cross Yeongdo Bridge, the historic connection between the island and the mainland. Opened in 1934, it was Busan’s first bridge to Yeongdo and Korea’s first drawbridge; its lifting function was restored after rebuilding.

The northwestern shore is still a working maritime landscape. Kkangkkangi Art Village sits among ship-repair businesses in Daepyeong-dong, opposite Jagalchi. This is a place to look at dry-docked hulls, workshops and harbor traffic rather than a polished waterfront.

Huinnyeoul and the coastal walk

Huinnyeoul Culture Village occupies a cliff above the sea. It began as a Korean War refugee settlement and was remade as a cultural village in 2011. Walk Huinnyeoul-gil for narrow lanes, small cafés, workshops and sea-facing gaps between the houses.

Below, the Jeoryeong Coastal Trail runs for about 3 km towards Taejongdae. It opened to the public in 2001 after the former military-protected coastline was converted into a walking route. The route includes tiled walls, sea views and the Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel.

Watch your footing: village stairways and sections of the coastal route are steep and uneven. Wear shoes with grip; this is not a flat promenade.

Taejongdae: cliffs, forest and lighthouse

At Yeongdo’s southern end, Taejongdae Park combines dense pine forest with wave-cut rock formations and cliffs. Take the circular walking road or use the Danubi Train, which stops near the observatory, Yeongdo Lighthouse and Taejongsa Temple.

The lighthouse and observatory are the island’s clearest coastal viewpoint. On a clear day, the horizon can extend to Tsushima. Allow time for the stairs between the observatory, lighthouse and Sinseon Rock.

Getting around

There is no subway station on Yeongdo. Take Metro Line 1 to Nampo or Jagalchi, then continue by city bus or taxi across a bridge. Local buses connect the main clusters, but a taxi is useful when linking Huinnyeoul and Taejongdae.

For an indoor counterpoint to the coast, the Korea National Maritime Museum is on the eastern side of the island. It fits naturally with a visit to the maritime university area and Jodo (Achi) Islet.
