Sehwa, Jeju
Sehwa is a coastal village in Gujwa-eup on northeast Jeju, centred on a small tidal beach, a five-day market and the living culture of the haenyeo divers.
Orientation
Sehwa sits on Jeju’s northeast coast in Gujwa-eup. It is a working village rather than a purpose-built resort: the useful anchors are the port, Sehwa Beach, the market and the Jeju Haenyeo Museum. The village was selected among UN Tourism’s Best Tourism Villages in 2023, reflecting its community-led approach to tourism, haenyeo heritage and field-wall landscapes.
The compact seafront is easy to cover on foot. Use the beach as the meeting point, then work west toward the market or east toward the museum.
Sehwa Beach
Sehwa Beach is a small strip of shell sand laid over basalt, immediately beside the coastal road and port. At low tide, white sand and black volcanic rock are exposed against clear water; at high tide, much of the narrow beach can disappear.
It is not a formally designated or managed swimming beach. Treat it primarily as a shoreline walk and time it for low tide if you want the full sand-and-basalt scene. Public parking and toilets are available nearby.
Important: strong waves, weather and the tide determine safe access. Do not enter the water without checking conditions and on-site safety notices.
Haenyeo heritage
The Jeju Haenyeo Museum is the essential context stop. Its collection covers the divers’ tools, working lives, fishing-village culture and folk practices; the exhibits were donated by haenyeo, and a reconstructed haenyeo house is part of the display.
The museum also stands at a site tied to the 1932 haenyeo anti-colonial movement. Its grounds include a memorial to the movement. Allow time for the museum before joining any community-led haenyeo activity: divers are working fishers, not a street performance.
Market and village rhythm
Sehwa Fifth-day Market runs on dates ending in 5 or 0. Go in the morning: it is busiest before noon and many stalls close by about 14:00. Expect produce, seafood, herbs, grain, prepared food and household goods rather than a curated souvenir market.
The port also hosts Bellongjang, a small flea market whose schedule varies. Do not build an itinerary around it without confirming that day’s programme.
Getting there and around
From Jeju City, bus 201 reaches the Haenyeo Museum entrance, followed by a short walk; bus 260 serves the museum directly. From the airport, express bus 101 stops at Sehwa Transfer Stop, around a 10-minute walk from the beach area.
With a car, use public parking around the beach or market, then continue on foot. Sehwa Beach lies on Jeju Olle Trail Route 20, between the market and the museum, so it also works as a concise stop on a coastal walk.
