Jeju Haenyeo Museum

Jeju Haenyeo Museum is a cultural museum in coastal Gujwa, northeast Jeju, dedicated to the island’s haenyeo—professional women free divers. Its exhibitions put their work, homes, tools and community life in context.

Why it matters

The haenyeo dive without oxygen tanks to gather seafood, drawing on learned knowledge of currents, seasons and fishing grounds. Their culture was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. This museum treats that tradition as work and community life, rather than a coastal spectacle.

It is in Gujwa, close to Sehwa Beach, at 26 Haenyeobangmulgwan-gil. Use it as the starting point for understanding the working coast of northeast Jeju.

What the galleries cover

The collection follows the haenyeo from village life to the sea. Many objects were donated by divers themselves, giving the displays a direct connection to the people whose lives they describe.

Look for:

  • Diving equipment: clothing, floats, nets and harvesting tools, showing the practical kit behind breath-hold work.
  • Home and village life: a reconstructed haenyeo house, food culture, farming and fishing, folk customs, and the economic role of divers.
  • The workplace: the bulteok, the shared coastal space where divers changed, warmed themselves and exchanged information.
  • History and memory: material on the haenyeo community and its social and historical significance.

The garden includes a memorial to the Jeju haenyeo anti-Japanese movement. It adds an important political chapter to the museum visit, not just a photo stop.

Visit efficiently

Allow about an hour for the permanent displays; stay longer if you want to read the contextual panels or use the outdoor grounds. Begin with the galleries, then go outside: the nearby coast makes more sense once you have seen the tools and learned what a bulteok is.

The museum is open 09:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:00. It is normally closed on Mondays, New Year’s Day, Seollal and Chuseok; when Monday is a public holiday, closure moves to the next working day. Standard individual admission is 1,100 won for adults and 500 won for teenagers. Parking is free.

Getting there

By car, follow Route 1132 towards Sehwa and Seongsan. On public transport from Jeju Bus Terminal, bus 260 stops at Haenyeo Museum; bus 201 stops at Haenyeo Museum Entrance, followed by a five-minute walk. From the airport, bus 101 reaches Sehwa Transfer Stop, about a 10-minute walk away.

This is an indoor cultural visit, not a live diving demonstration. Do not expect to see divers working from the museum grounds; sea work depends on local conditions and schedules.
