Jagalchi Market

Jagalchi Market is Busan’s waterfront seafood market in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu. Its outdoor stalls, live-fish tanks and upstairs restaurants put the city’s sea trade and seafood cooking in one compact stop.

What Jagalchi is

Jagalchi is a working seafood market on Busan’s waterfront at 52 Jagalchihaean-ro in Jung-gu. The name refers to the large pebbles once found along this shore. Fish stalls were established here during the Japanese colonial period, and the market expanded as refugees arrived in Busan during and after the Korean War.

The market has two distinct faces. Outside, stalls and parasols line the waterfront with fresh and dried seafood. Inside the modern building, the first floor is arranged around tanks holding live fish and shellfish. Women vendors, widely known as Jagalchi ajumeoni, remain an enduring part of the market’s identity.

Use the building properly

Start on the first floor. This is the live-fish market: walk the tank rows before choosing anything, and point to what you want if the Korean name is unfamiliar.

The usual sequence is simple:

  1. Choose and buy seafood from a first-floor vendor.
  2. Take it to a second-floor restaurant for preparation.
  3. Eat it as sliced raw fish (hoe), grilled fish, or spicy fish stew (maeuntang).

Restaurants and vendors are separate businesses. Seafood and preparation are therefore separate charges. Agree the species, weight, seafood price, cooking method and any table or preparation fee before the order is taken. That keeps a market meal clear and avoids a surprise total.

If you prefer not to select from tanks, use a restaurant menu instead. The market also sells dried seafood, useful for taking home rather than eating on site.

Look beyond the tanks

The outdoor strip is worth a separate pass. It is less uniform than the indoor hall and gives the clearest sense of Jagalchi’s waterfront setting: baskets, tubs, dried goods and fresh catch sit close to the harbour.

For a wider view, take the elevator to the seventh floor and climb one more flight to the open observation deck. It looks across the water towards Yeongdo Island. Nearby Nampo-dong, BIFF Square and the dried-seafood market are all easy to combine on foot.

Timing and access

The listed market hours are 05:00–22:00. The main official listings differ on whether the fifth Tuesday is also a closure, so avoid planning a market meal around a Tuesday without confirming locally.

For Metro Line 1, use Nampo Station Exit 2 or Jagalchi Station Exit 10; each is about a six-minute walk. The building has elevators, accessible parking and accessible toilets.

Come early for the outdoor market’s working rhythm, or late morning if you want the tank halls and restaurants operating together. Floors around the tanks are wet by design; wear shoes with reliable grip.
