Labuan Bajo sits on the west end of Flores and serves as the capital of West Manggarai Regency. Its harbour is the operational centre: tour boats, ferries and liveaboards use the waterfront, while accommodation, dive operators and restaurants spread along the rising streets behind it.

Treat the town and Komodo National Park as separate places. Labuan Bajo is on Flores; Komodo, Rinca and Padar are islands reached by boat. That distinction matters when planning departure times, park entry and overnight stays.

The harbour and town

The waterfront is Labuan Bajo’s defining scene: fishing vessels and wooden phinisi boats share the bay with speedboats and liveaboards. Walk the harbour area to understand the departure points, but get the exact jetty and meeting time from your boat operator; there is no single cruise terminal.

For an evening in town, head to Kampung Ujung, the local food area. Look for grilled seafood and Flores specialities such as kolo, rice cooked in bamboo, or sesame-topped kompiang bread. Manggarai coffee and songke cloth are useful local purchases rather than generic souvenirs.

Beyond the jetty

Labuan Bajo is best used as a base for a full boat day or a multi-night liveaboard. Park itineraries commonly combine Padar’s hill viewpoint, Komodo or Rinca for dragons, and Pink Beach or marine stops. Routes change with sea conditions, tides and park management, so do not assume every stop fits into one day.

On land, Goa Batu Cermin (Mirror Cave) is about 4 km from town. Light catches reflective rock in parts of this limestone cave. The viewpoints at Bukit Cinta, Puncak Amelia and Puncak Silvia look across the harbour and islands; use them for a town-based sunset rather than trying to squeeze them around an early boat departure.

Arrival and movement

By air: Komodo Airport (LBJ) serves Labuan Bajo. Flights connect it with Indonesian hubs; schedules vary.

By sea and road: Ferries, passenger ships and liveaboards reach the port, while roads connect Labuan Bajo with the rest of Flores. Within town, use an ojek, hired car, bemo or walking for short central distances.

Stay near the harbour if you have an early boat departure. Ask the operator whether pickup, park charges, meals, snorkelling gear and transfers are included before paying.

Park access and timing

April to November is generally the more workable period for Komodo boat trips. The park operates conservation controls, including visitor limits, and access arrangements can change. Secure a park place through an authorised operator before committing to flights or a boat.

Important: dragon walks are ranger-led. Follow the ranger, keep your distance, do not feed or approach wildlife, and do not leave marked walking routes. For diving and snorkelling, choose an operator suited to the day’s conditions; currents in the Komodo area can be strong.
