Komodo National Park spreads across the strait between Sumbawa and Flores. Komodo, Rinca and Padar are its three principal islands, joined by smaller islets and protected sea. This is not a single walk-in park: boats connect every major stop, while the land shifts quickly from rugged slopes and dry grassland to mangrove-fringed bays.

The park was established to protect the Komodo dragon and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Its wider biosphere reserve sits in the ecological transition between Asian and Australian flora and fauna.

What the park protects

The Komodo dragon is the essential reason to come. It is the world’s largest living lizard and survives in the wild only in this part of Indonesia. On land, look beyond the dragons for Timor deer, wild boar, macaques and orange-footed scrubfowl.

The setting is notably dry for Indonesia. Open grassland and woodland savanna dominate, with monsoon forest in sheltered valleys, mangroves in calm bays and small areas of cloud forest at higher elevations.

Offshore, the park protects coral reefs, seagrass and rich fish life. Powerful currents make the water productive but also demand conservative planning from snorkellers and divers.

Main experiences

• Dragon walks: Ranger-led trails on Komodo Island and Rinca are the controlled way to see dragons in their habitat. The ranger selects the route according to conditions and animal activity.
• Padar’s ridgeline: A steep path gives a clear read of the park’s volcanic geography: narrow ridges, enclosed bays and contrasting beaches.
• Reef time: Snorkelling and diving are central parts of a park visit. Choose sites and conditions suited to your experience; currents can be serious.
• Coastal landscapes: Mangroves, beaches and dry headlands are as much part of the park as its flagship reptile.

Getting there and moving around

Labuan Bajo, on western Flores, is the practical gateway. Fly there, then join a licensed speedboat trip or liveaboard; all island itineraries are boat-based. A day trip can combine a dragon trail with Padar and a swim stop, while an overnight boat gives more room for diving and longer crossings.

There is no self-guided trekking in dragon areas. Park zoning also determines where boats can anchor, dive or land, so follow the route set by your crew and rangers.

Rules that matter

Stay with the ranger. Do not approach, feed or touch dragons; they are powerful wild predators, not a photo prop. Keep to marked trails and obey an instruction to stop or move back immediately.

Treat the sea as protected habitat. Do not touch coral or marine animals, and take all rubbish back to the boat. Drones require prior permission.

Plan for heat and exposure. Wear closed walking shoes for trails, carry water, and use sun protection. In the water, follow local guidance on currents rather than treating a familiar-looking bay as a safe independent swim.
