Huayna Potosí

Huayna Potosí is a 6,088-metre glaciated peak in Bolivia’s Cordillera Real, about 25 km north of La Paz. Its road access and standard glacier route make it a major Bolivian mountaineering objective—not a casual hike.

Orientation

Huayna Potosí rises above the Altiplano in the La Paz Department, near El Alto and roughly 25 km from La Paz. Its Aymara name is commonly rendered as “young mountain.” At 6,088 m, it is a serious high-altitude peak with a sharp, ice-covered summit profile.

The mountain is often promoted as an accessible 6,000er because the road reaches Zongo Pass at about 4,700 m. Accessibility is relative: altitude, crevassed glacier terrain and an exposed summit finish remain central to the climb.

The standard ascent

Most parties use a two- or three-day approach from Zongo Pass. A basic outline is:

  • Base area: Zongo Pass, around 4,700–4,800 m, with refuges and camping used by climbing groups.
  • High camp: Campo Alto/Rock Camp near 5,200 m, reached across moraine and loose rock.
  • Summit push: usually starts overnight. The route crosses glacier terrain before steepening onto the final ridge.

The climb requires crampons, an ice axe, harness, rope and crevasse-rescue equipment. The summit ridge is narrow and can carry a cornice; conditions determine whether a safe finish is possible.

What to expect

The lower approach is a mountain walk, but the summit route is alpine climbing. Glacier crossings, cold, wind and the physical effect of 6,000 m make pace and judgment more important than distance. A clear track on the glacier is not a substitute for route assessment.

The western face has much harder snow-and-ice lines. Treat these as technical objectives for experienced alpinists rather than variants of the standard trip.

Timing and preparation

The drier months from May to September are the principal climbing season. They tend to bring clearer weather, but also hard cold and strong winds. Snow can fall at any time of year.

Arrive acclimatised. Spend several days at altitude around La Paz or El Alto, and do not compress the mountain itinerary merely to save a night. A three-day plan gives more time for acclimatisation and for practising crampon movement, self-arrest and rope travel.

Essential safety

Do not mistake Huayna Potosí for an introductory trek. Use a properly equipped mountain guide for glacier travel, and turn back for altitude symptoms, unsafe snow, poor visibility or high wind. Carry insulated layers, gloves, eye protection, headtorch, water and high-energy food; the high camps are sparse and cold.
