Mercado Lanza

Mercado Lanza is a four-level municipal market in central La Paz, close to Plaza San Francisco and Plaza Pérez Velasco. It combines everyday shopping with juice counters and a fourth-floor dining area.

What it is

Mercado Lanza is a working municipal market in La Paz’s historic centre, a short walk from Plaza San Francisco. The present large concrete building opened in 2010, replacing the earlier market on the same site. It is designed as a dense, multi-level commercial building rather than a picturesque street market: come to eat, shop for daily goods and see a routine part of central-city life.

Find your way around

The market is organised by trade across four main levels. Expect fresh produce, meat, dairy, dry goods and household shopping alongside flowers, books, jewellery, clothing and small general-goods stalls. The fourth level is the food area, where compact kitchens serve prepared meals.

There are entrances from Plaza Mayor de San Francisco, Calle Evaristo Valle and Calle Figueroa, plus an elevated connection from the Pérez Velasco pedestrian bridge. Use the entrance nearest your approach; the internal passages do not form a simple straight route.

Eat upstairs

The food floor is the practical reason to stop. Look for small counters serving breakfast, soups, salteñas and lunch plates. Fresh fruit drinks are blended to order at stalls on lower levels. This is market food made for nearby workers and shoppers, not a formal restaurant setting: order directly, take an available seat and expect the selection to vary by stall and time of day.

A useful order is a salteña or soup for a light meal, or an almuerzo for lunch. Fruit juice is a good quick stop when walking between central sights.

Location and access

Mercado Lanza stands by Plaza Pérez Velasco, north of Plaza San Francisco, in the Centro area of La Paz. It fits easily into a central walk: the San Francisco complex is nearby, while Plaza Murillo lies farther south-east.

Approach on foot if you are already in the centre. The Pérez Velasco footbridge provides a direct elevated approach from the surrounding major roads. Allow time for stairs, changing levels and narrow passages rather than treating the market as a quick through-route.

Practical approach

Give the market 30 to 60 minutes for a drink and meal; allow longer if browsing its retail floors. Go in daylight and keep bags closed in crowded passages. Ask before taking close photographs of vendors or their stalls.

The building has faced maintenance and access problems, and a municipal revitalisation process has proposed improved entrances, lighting and security. Some sections or doors may therefore be less active than others; if one approach feels quiet, use another entrance or head to the food floor.
