Stari Most (Old Bridge)

The bridge in context

Stari Most crosses the Neretva at the tightest, steep-sided part of Mostar’s old town. Built in 1566 for Sultan Süleyman, it was designed by Mimar Hajruddin, a pupil of the Ottoman master Sinan. The hump-backed limestone arch is about 30 metres long and four metres wide, with no pier in the river.

The bridge was destroyed by shelling on 9 November 1993. Reconstruction followed 16th-century methods and used stone from the same local quarry; the rebuilt bridge reopened in 2004. The surrounding Old Bridge Area entered the World Heritage List in 2005. This is not a decorative replica: it is a deliberately exact reconstruction of a crossing central to Mostar’s urban identity.

Read the structure

Approach from either bank and pause before crossing. The arch climbs sharply from both ends, so its narrow roadway reads more like a stone ridge than a level bridge. Look for the two fortified towers at either side: Halebija on the northeast bank and Tara on the southwest.

The best full-arch views come from the riverbanks rather than the deck. From below, the bridge’s single curve, pale stonework and rocky abutments are clear; on the bridge, the principal view is along the Neretva gorge and the old-town roofs.

Crossing and timing

Stari Most is a public pedestrian crossing and there is no bridge ticket. It sits within Mostar’s compact historic core, reached on foot through the cobbled lanes on either side of the river.

• Walk early or later in the day for a clearer crossing and less congestion on the narrow span.
• Wear shoes with grip. The worn stone surface is steep and can be slick, especially in rain.
• Keep the centre moving. Stop on either approach or at a riverbank viewpoint rather than blocking the crest for photographs.

The Tara Tower by the bridge contains the Old Bridge Museum, which concentrates on the structure’s construction, destruction and rebuilding. It is the useful add-on if the bridge’s physical history matters more than a quick crossing.

Divers and river safety

Bridge diving is a long-running Mostar tradition, but the Neretva below is cold and fast-moving. If trained local divers are preparing a jump, give them space, stay behind any barriers and watch from the banks or designated public areas. Do not climb the parapet or attempt the jump yourself.

The bridge is most powerful when treated as both a working route and a record of loss and reconstruction. Cross it, then step down to river level to see why this particular span defines Mostar.
