Babin Do, Bjelašnica

Babin Do is the ski base on the northern slopes of Bjelašnica, above Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the finish area for Bjelašnica’s 1984 Olympic men’s downhill and the practical hub for the mountain’s lifts and pistes.

Orientation

Babin Do sits at roughly 1,270 metres on Bjelašnica’s northern side, at the foot of the ski area below the 2,067-metre summit. This is a compact mountain base rather than a standalone village centre: lifts, pistes, parking, accommodation and mountain services cluster around the finish bowl.

The setting matters. The mountain is exposed, steep in places and built around a serious vertical drop, not gentle resort cruising.

The Olympic finish zone

The men’s alpine events of the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics took place on Bjelašnica. The downhill finished at Babin Do after an approximately 800-metre descent from high on the mountain; Bill Johnson won the delayed Olympic downhill here.

Look uphill from the base to understand the scale of the venue. The broad lower slopes, lift lines and finish area remain the clearest physical link to the Olympic course. The original venue was heavily damaged during the 1992–95 war, but skiing infrastructure has since been rebuilt and modernised in stages.

Skiing from Babin Do

Babin Do is the access point for the Bjelašnica ski centre. The area has pistes for different abilities, including dedicated children’s runs, with chairlifts and surface lifts serving the slopes. A fast six-seat chairlift is the principal uphill connection from the base; other lifts extend coverage higher on the mountain.

  • Terrain: expect a mountain with an Olympic pedigree and steeper sections, rather than a wide beginner-only area.
  • Vertical: lifts reach towards the 2,067-metre summit, giving a substantial descent back to Babin Do.
  • Winter conditions: wind and heavy snow can affect lift operations on the exposed upper mountain.

Buy the appropriate lift ticket before boarding; tickets are personal and misuse can lead to cancellation.

Getting there and moving around

Babin Do is reached by mountain road from the Sarajevo area. In winter, use a properly equipped vehicle or arrange a transfer; the final approach can be snowy or icy. Once at the base, the useful distances are short: walk between the lift terminals, rental and service points, and accommodation around the bowl.

For skiing, orient yourself at the base before heading uphill. Wind closures can alter the most useful route down, so follow the open-piste and lift information issued on the day.

Summer and mountain safety

Outside snow season, Babin Do is a starting point for marked mountain routes and lift-assisted views. It is not a substitute for the summit or the wider Bjelašnica plateau; treat it as the access base.

Important: stay on marked paths, maintained roads and designated ski terrain. Bjelašnica was a conflict zone during the 1990s; do not shortcut through rough ground or ignore warning signs.
