Veliko Polje, Igman

Veliko Polje is Igman’s open highland meadow southwest of Sarajevo, best known as the cross-country skiing and biathlon venue of the 1984 Winter Olympics. Its surviving Nordic trails remain in use in winter, with walking and cycling routes taking over in the snow-free months.

Orientation

Veliko Polje—“Great Field”—is a broad meadow on the Igman plateau, set among conifer forest at roughly 1,100–1,200 metres. This is the quieter, endurance-sport side of Igman: an open landscape crossed by forest tracks rather than a downhill ski resort.

The place is closely tied to Sarajevo’s 1984 Winter Olympics. Do not confuse it with nearby Malo Polje, where the ski-jump complex stands; Veliko Polje was the venue for the Nordic races on the ground.

Olympic course legacy

Veliko Polje staged the Olympic biathlon and cross-country skiing competitions, as well as the cross-country portion of Nordic combined. The competition programme ran here from 9 to 18 February 1984.

The course network was built for endurance racing through meadow and woodland. Much of the specialist Olympic infrastructure was damaged during the 1992–95 war, but the landscape and sections of its trail system remain the point of a visit.

What to do

In winter: Around 15 km of the former 39 km network remains in use by local cross-country skiers. Conditions depend entirely on natural snowfall, so this is a practical Nordic outing rather than a full-service ski resort experience.

Outside winter: The same rolling tracks are used by walkers, runners and cyclists. The terrain is suited to a low-key half-day outdoors rather than a summit hike.

  • Follow established, signed paths and forestry roads.
  • Bring water and an extra layer: this is an exposed mountain plateau.
  • Treat the meadow as a shared recreation area; give skiers space when tracks are in use.

Getting your bearings

Veliko Polje is on Mount Igman, southwest of Sarajevo, and is reached by mountain roads across the plateau. The Olympic ski jumps at Malo Polje are separate and nearby, but they are not part of Veliko Polje’s competition site.

For a useful on-the-ground marker, look for the open field and the cross-country trail corridors entering the trees. The ruined former Olympic Village B/Hotel Igman stands in the wider Veliko Polje area; view its exterior only and do not enter unstable structures.

Timing

Come in winter for cross-country skiing when snow cover permits. From late spring through autumn, the meadow-and-forest setting works best for walking, running and cycling. The open plateau offers little shelter, so plan for fast-changing mountain conditions.
