Theth

The valley

Theth sits in Shkodër County, roughly 750 metres above sea level, in the Accursed Mountains. This is a village of stone houses, farms and guesthouses rather than a compact centre. The river, meadows, beech-covered slopes and pale limestone walls are the essential geography; allow for distances between places.

The valley is part of the protected Albanian Alps landscape. Stay on marked paths, close gates behind you and treat working farms and guesthouse grounds as private property.

Village landmarks

The Church of Theth is the village’s defining building: a modest stone Catholic church standing alone in a meadow beneath the mountains. It is an easy first stop and the clearest point from which to understand Theth’s scattered layout.

Nearby, the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) is a thick-walled stone refuge associated with the Kanun, the customary code of the northern highlands. Men threatened in blood feuds once sheltered in such towers. Visit it as a historical record, not folklore theatre; access can be informal, so ask at your guesthouse locally.

Waterfalls, springs and walks

Theth is a walking destination. The most useful choices are:

• Grunas Waterfall: a short forest walk from the village to a roughly 25–30 metre cascade and gorge.
• Blue Eye of Theth: a cold, turquoise karst pool near Ndërlysa, reached by a longer valley walk or by shortening the approach with a local transfer. It is not the Blue Eye near Sarandë in southern Albania.
• Valbonë Pass: a full-day, point-to-point mountain crossing to Valbonë. It requires fitness, stable conditions and onward accommodation or transport.

Wear proper footwear, carry water and a warm layer, and do not treat high routes as short village strolls. Weather changes quickly above the valley.

Getting in and around

Shkodër is the usual gateway. In the warmer season, shared furgons and private transfers use the mountain road over Qafa e Thorës; the journey is about 70 km and typically takes 2.5–3.5 hours. The road is paved but narrow, steep and full of switchbacks.

Once in Theth, walk. There is no local bus network, and trails connect the church, waterfall, Blue Eye and outlying hamlets. A car is useful for arrival or trailhead transfers, not for exploring the village itself.

Season and essentials

June to September is the dependable window for open trails and guesthouses. Snow can close the pass in winter, when most accommodation shuts and normal hiking is not viable.

Bring enough cash from Shkodër: there is no ATM in Theth and card acceptance is unreliable. In July and August, arrange a guesthouse before travelling; family-run stays commonly provide meals as well as a bed.
