Read the city

Berat’s historic core is arranged around the Osum River. Mangalem rises from the foot of the castle hill on the north bank; Gorica occupies the opposite bank. Their terraces of houses, built with large, regularly spaced windows, give Berat its familiar “city of a thousand windows” profile.

The historic centre is part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra. This is a working town rather than a preserved set piece: use the lanes as residential streets and keep noise low, particularly inside the citadel.

Start with the Kala

The Kala, Berat Castle, stands above Mangalem and is the oldest part of the town. Its origins reach back to the 4th century BC, while much of the surviving fortification dates from the 13th century. It remains an inhabited neighbourhood of houses, gardens, lanes, churches and mosques.

Walk up from Mangalem if you want the full topographic logic of the city; the climb is steep and cobbled. A short taxi ride to the gate is the practical alternative. Allow time to wander rather than treating the castle as a single monument.

Inside, look for:

• Church of the Holy Trinity, a Byzantine church of the 13th–14th centuries.
• St Mary’s Cathedral, home to the Onufri National Iconographic Museum.
• The ramparts and open views over the river, Mangalem and Gorica.

Churches, mosques and icons

Berat’s appeal lies in the overlap of its religious and domestic architecture. The citadel contains numerous Byzantine churches, many associated with the 13th century, alongside mosques from the Ottoman period. In the lower town, the Lead Mosque, Bachelors’ Mosque and Helveti Tekke add further layers to a compact walk.

At the Onufri museum, focus on the icons and church setting. Onufri established an influential 16th-century school of painting in Berat; the city’s medieval churches are also known for their wall paintings. Dress modestly in active religious buildings and respect any photography restrictions.

Cross to Gorica

Use Gorica Bridge to connect the two historic quarters. The bridge is an 18th-century Ottoman-period structure and gives the clearest broad view back to Mangalem’s stacked façades. Cross it, then take the quieter lanes of Gorica uphill for changing perspectives of the castle and river.

For a compact first visit, combine the Kala, a descent through Mangalem and the bridge crossing in one day. Wear shoes with grip: polished cobbles and steep stone lanes are the main practical challenge, especially after rain.
