Avni Rustemi Square

Avni Rustemi Square is a protected 1935 public square on the southern approach to Tirana’s New Bazaar, about 500 metres east of Skanderbeg Square. It links the market quarter with the inner ring road and the streets beyond it.

Orientation

Avni Rustemi Square is the threshold between central Tirana and the Pazari i Ri, or New Bazaar, quarter. It is a compact urban square rather than the covered food market itself. Use it as a meeting point and a useful map pin for approaching the bazaar from the south.

The square lies about 500 metres from Tirana’s main square. From Skanderbeg Square, walk east through the centre towards Rruga Luigj Gurakuqi; the market streets and their cafés begin around the square.

What the square connects

Two streets make the square more than a pause on the way to the market:

  • Hoxha Tahsim and Tefta Tashko-Koço connect it towards Tirana’s inner ring road.
  • Pazari i Ri lies immediately to its north, with pedestrian market lanes, food stalls, cafés and restaurants.

This is a practical place to orient yourself before exploring the bazaar. The covered produce market is best treated as a separate stop: it is where fruit, vegetables, meat and fish trading concentrate, while the streets around it shift toward food and drink later in the day.

Heritage and setting

Built in 1935, Avni Rustemi Square has been a Category II cultural monument since 2007. Its significance is urban as much as architectural: it anchors the transition between the older Mujo/New Bazaar area and the wider city centre.

Look for the memorial bust of Avni Rustemi, the square’s clearest fixed landmark. Around it, the experience is defined by street movement, market access and the mix of older buildings with newer interventions in the bazaar quarter.

Access and current works

The square is public space, with no admission charge. Walking is the sensible way to arrive; the bazaar area is easier on foot than by car.

Important: redevelopment has included a two-level underground car park and façade works along Rruga Luigj Gurakuqi. Construction phases can alter pedestrian routes and vehicle access around the square. Allow a little extra time if arriving by taxi or from the inner ring road; enter the market quarter on foot once nearby.

For market activity, visit in the morning. The surrounding restaurants and cafés are the more reliable reason to return later in the day.
