Bunk’Art 1

Bunk’Art 1 is a former anti-nuclear command bunker turned history and art museum on Tirana’s eastern edge, near the Dajti cable car. Its five underground levels expose the infrastructure and ideology of communist Albania.

What this bunker was

Bunk’Art 1 occupies a Cold War anti-nuclear bunker on Rruga Fadil Deliu, at the foot of Mount Dajti. Enver Hoxha inaugurated the complex in June 1978; it was built to protect the political and military leadership in wartime. It became a permanent public museum in 2016.

This is the larger of Tirana’s two Bunk’Art sites. The structure itself is the point: five subterranean levels, 106 rooms and a large assembly hall, reached through a long, dim access tunnel.

What to see inside

The route combines original command infrastructure with historical displays and art installations. Allow time to read the chronological galleries, which cover:

  • the Italian occupation, wartime diplomacy and German occupation;
  • postwar Albania and the communist period through 1990;
  • military communications, support operations and life under the regime.

Look for the rooms prepared for Enver Hoxha and prime minister Mehmet Shehu, the chief-of-staff and officers’ rooms, and the military communications and telecommunications displays. The assembly hall makes the bunker’s intended role unmistakable: this was planned as a functioning underground command centre, not a small shelter.

Getting there

Bunk’Art 1 is outside the compact centre, beside the lower station area for the Dajti Ekspres cable car. The Qendër–Porcelan bus leaves from near the Clock Tower and stops at Bunk’Art 1; a taxi is the simpler option from central Tirana.

The cable car is close enough to combine with the museum, but do not treat either as a quick stop. The bunker alone merits at least an hour, and longer if you want to work through the exhibition properly.

Hours and tickets

The museum currently lists daily hours of 09:30–17:30. Hours can vary seasonally, so avoid leaving the visit to the final part of the afternoon.

A combined ticket for Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2 is available and remains valid for 72 hours. Audio guides and private guides are available; bring your own headphones if using an audio guide.

Conditions underground

The bunker is noticeably cooler than outside even in summer; bring a light layer. Expect extended walking through enclosed concrete corridors and several levels. The historic layout includes tunnels and stairs, so it is not a straightforward visit for people who need step-free access or dislike confined spaces.
