Old Airport Road Food Centre

Old Airport Road Food Centre is a large, purpose-built hawker centre at 51 Old Airport Road in Singapore’s Kallang area. Its ground floor gathers long-running food stalls beneath a broad flat roof, with shops above.

Why it matters

Built in 1972 to resettle street hawkers from Kallang Estate, Old Airport Road Food Centre occupies land associated with the former runway of Kallang Airport. It is a practical piece of Singapore’s hawker-centre history rather than a recreated food hall: a two-level emporium-and-hawker-centre design, with food stalls on the ground floor and commercial space above.

The original building contained 176 food stalls and 136 shop units. A major upgrade in 2006–07 expanded the dining provision; the centre remains a large, working communal dining room.

Finding your way around

The address is 51 Old Airport Road, Singapore 390051. Dakota MRT station on the Circle Line is the closest rail stop; the food centre is a short walk away. Arrive through the ground-floor entrances and take one full circuit before joining a queue. Stall numbers beginning #01- identify the food level.

The layout is functional: banks of stalls face shared tables, so food from different vendors can be combined in one meal. The upper floor is not the main dining area.

What to eat

This is a centre for comparison, not a single signature dish. Start with a few focused orders and share them rather than attempting a long list.

  • Hokkien mee: Nam Sing Hokkien Mee is known for wok-fried noodles enriched with prawn-and-meat broth.
  • Char kway teow: Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow serves the fried flat-rice-noodle classic with prawns, Chinese sausage, cockles and bean sprouts.
  • Lor mee: Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee is a useful choice for thick yellow noodles in a braised gravy, topped with fried fish.
  • Roast meats: Roast Paradise serves caramelised char siew and roast pork with rice or noodles.
  • Something cold: Nyonya Chendol combines shaved ice, coconut milk, gula melaka, green jelly and red beans.

Menus, queues and operating days vary by stall. Some popular counters finish their prep and close well before the centre itself quietens.

How to use a hawker centre

Find a table first when it is busy, then order at the stalls; table sharing is normal. Bring a small amount of cash as payment methods differ between vendors. Order directly, state whether you are eating in or taking away, and collect when called if the stall uses a queue number.

Return trays, crockery and litter to the designated return points after eating. This is not optional at Singapore hawker centres.

Best timing

Go outside the main lunch and dinner surges if choice matters more than atmosphere. Late morning is useful for stalls that open for lunch; early afternoon can be quieter but some favourites may be sold out or closed. For a wider selection, do not leave the visit until late evening.
