Little India, Singapore
Little India is Singapore’s historic Indian cultural precinct, centred on Serangoon Road near Little India MRT. It combines temples, conserved shophouses, specialist shops and Tekka Centre’s market and hawker food hall.
Get oriented
Little India occupies the historic Serangoon Road district north-east of Singapore’s civic core. Serangoon Road is the spine: follow it between Tekka Centre at the southern end and the temples and shops farther north. The neighbourhood grew around cattle and dairy trades; Buffalo Road and Kerbau Road still preserve that history in their names.
The district is a designated conservation area. Look beyond the painted façades: its streets also hold Hindu temples, mosques, churches, Chinese associations and businesses serving local Indian communities.
Start at Tekka Centre
Tekka Centre, beside Little India MRT, is the practical starting point. Its market, shops and hawker centre make it a working local hub rather than a single-purpose attraction.
- Eat: Buy from a cooked-food stall, then use an available shared table. Indian, Malay and Chinese food are all represented.
- Browse: The market sells fresh ingredients; the upper-level shops are useful for textiles, clothing and household goods.
- Do your part: Return trays and crockery to the designated return stations after eating.
The former Tekka Market stood across the road. The present centre continues its role as the district’s everyday market.
Walk Serangoon Road
From Tekka, walk south-east along Serangoon Road to Campbell Lane and the Little India Arcade. This cluster of conserved 1913 shophouses contains small eateries and shops selling sweets, clothing, gifts and religious goods. Covered five-foot ways provide welcome shelter along parts of the route.
Continue to Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, a temple dedicated to Kali. Its elaborate gopuram, or entrance tower, is one of the clearest landmarks in the district. For a longer, more varied circuit, the neighbourhood also includes Abdul Gafoor Mosque, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, Buddhist temples and historic churches.
Shops, food and heritage
This is a district for specific purchases rather than generic souvenirs: saris and textiles, flower garlands, spices, incense, Indian sweets and metal household wares are established local trades. Mustafa Centre on Syed Alwi Road is a large, round-the-clock department store for everything from groceries to electronics.
The Indian Heritage Centre on Campbell Lane provides the historical context for Singapore’s Indian communities. Its galleries are a useful counterpoint to the street-level experience.
Getting there and visiting well
Take the North East Line or Downtown Line to Little India MRT; Tekka Centre and Serangoon Road are immediately nearby. The compact central area is best covered on foot. Farrer Park MRT is useful for the northern end of the district.
Temples and other religious sites are active places of worship. Dress respectfully, remove shoes where required and follow instructions on entry. Little India is also a major setting for Deepavali and Pongal celebrations; expect altered street conditions and heavier foot traffic during festival periods.
