Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre
Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre is a two-level wet market and hawker centre at 1 Geylang Serai in eastern Singapore. It is a longstanding focal point for Malay and Indian-Muslim food, ingredients and retail.
What this place is
This is a working market, not a food hall designed for sightseeing. The ground floor is for fresh produce and provisions; the upper floor is the food centre, with shared tables and cooked-food stalls. Its roots reach back to pre-war market activity, while the covered market opened in 1964.
The present building was rebuilt in the late 2000s. Its pitched form recalls a Malay kampong house, making the architecture part of the visit rather than mere decoration.
Eat upstairs
The food centre is a practical place to explore Malay and Indian-Muslim cooking. Walk a full circuit before ordering: individual stalls set their own menus, hours and rest days.
Start with nasi padang: rice is served with a choice of prepared dishes. Common options include beef rendang, grilled ayam bakar and tahu telur, an egg-and-tofu dish. Other useful orders include:
- Mee rebus or mee soto for noodle dishes.
- Lontong for rice cakes with gravy.
- Briyani for spiced rice dishes.
- Kueh or putu piring for a sweet finish.
Most food stalls focus on halal Malay or Indian-Muslim fare, but check a particular stall if formal halal certification matters to you. Choose a table, order at the counter, then return trays and crockery to the designated points after eating.
Browse the market below
Come in the morning if the wet market is central to your visit. The lower level sells fish, poultry, vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices and dry goods used in Malay cooking, alongside clothing and other retail. It is a place for local shopping, so keep clear of counters and customers carrying purchases. Ask before making close photographs of sellers or displays.
The market’s value is its connection between ingredients and the food upstairs: spices, coconut-based gravies, seafood and rice dishes are not abstract menu items here.
Timing and Ramadan
Morning combines the most active wet-market trade with breakfast stalls. Lunch is useful for cooked food, although popular items can sell out and many stalls wind down later in the day. Weekends are busier.
The permanent market and food centre are separate from the seasonal Ramadan bazaar in the wider Geylang Serai district. During Ramadan, expect heavier pedestrian traffic nearby, but do not assume temporary bazaar hours apply to this building.
Getting there
Address: 1 Geylang Serai, Singapore 402001. Paya Lebar MRT, served by the East West and Circle lines, is the most practical rail stop; allow for a walk through the surrounding streets. Nearby bus services also serve the Geylang Serai area. Use the full market address for taxi or ride-hail drop-off.
