Chomp Chomp Food Centre

Chomp Chomp Food Centre is a compact evening hawker centre at 20 Kensington Park Road in Serangoon Gardens, Singapore. Its open-sided dining area is built for dinner and supper rather than daytime meals.

What it is

Chomp Chomp Food Centre is a purpose-built hawker centre in Serangoon Gardens, with 36 cooked-food stalls. It opened in 1972 after street hawkers were moved from an eating area opposite the present site. The name has stayed, and so has the centre’s after-dark role in the neighbourhood.

This is a food stop, not a market complex: arrive ready to order from separate stalls, then eat at the shared tables. The building remains open-sided, with a pitched roof sheltering the central seating and outdoor tables.

What to eat

The centre is particularly associated with fried Hokkien mee and barbecued seafood. The practical approach is to order a few dishes across stalls and share them rather than build a meal around one counter.

Look for the familiar hawker repertoire, including grilled items, noodle dishes and fried snacks. Portions, spice levels and preparation styles are stall-specific, so use the stall displays to decide. A cold sugar-cane drink is a common pairing with grilled and chilli-forward dishes.

When to go

Plan Chomp Chomp for dinner or supper. It is not designed as a lunch destination; stalls generally come alive from late afternoon, while each operator keeps its own schedule.

The busiest period is in the evening, especially on weekends. Go earlier for a calmer meal and a better chance of finding a table; later visits deliver the full supper atmosphere but can mean waits at popular stalls. Do not assume every stall will be open at the same time.

Layout and eating strategy

The centre is small, with a central cluster of shared seating, so choose a table before splitting up to order. One person can hold the table while others queue; collect dishes as they are ready rather than waiting for every order.

The 2003–04 rebuilding added improved shelter, raised timber-platform seating and accessible features. It remains an outdoor-style hawker setting: expect warm, humid conditions and occasional rain blowing in from the open sides.

Finding it

The address is 20 Kensington Park Road, Singapore 557269, close to Serangoon Garden Circus. It sits within Serangoon Gardens, opposite the former eating area from which its original hawkers relocated.

Use the full address for a taxi or ride-hailing drop-off. If driving, allow extra time at dinner because this is a compact residential precinct and evening demand concentrates around the food centre.
