Zaisan, Ulaanbaatar
Zaisan is the southern Ulaanbaatar neighbourhood at the foot of Bogd Khan Uul, best known for its hilltop Soviet-era memorial and city panorama. It is also a practical starting point for short walks onto the mountain’s northern slopes.
Orientation
Zaisan sits south of the Tuul River, where Ulaanbaatar meets the lower northern slopes of Bogd Khan Uul. Its defining landmark is Zaisan Memorial, high on Zaisan Hill. The summit puts the city’s dense centre, newer southern development and the mountain edge into one view.
This is primarily a viewpoint and urban trailhead, not a wilderness destination. Use it to understand the geography before heading farther into Bogd Khan Uul.
Zaisan Memorial
The memorial honours Mongolian and Soviet soldiers and was unveiled in 1971. Its main feature is an open circular monument lined with ceramic mosaics. Walk the full circuit: the panels trace Mongolian-Soviet history, including the 1921 revolution, the 1939 Khalkhin Gol campaign, the Second World War and Soviet spaceflight.
At the foot of the hill, a separate T-34 tank memorial recalls the Mongolian-funded Revolutionary Mongolia tank brigade. It is a worthwhile stop before or after the climb.
The climb and the view
A staircase of roughly 612 steps rises from the lower approach to the memorial. An upper access point reduces the ascent to about 300 steps, but there is still a sustained climb. The stairs are exposed, so take water and a windproof layer.
At the top, look north across Ulaanbaatar and the Tuul valley; turn south for the immediate wooded flank of Bogd Khan Uul. Give the mosaics and panorama 45–90 minutes in total.
Winter warning: steps can be icy. Wear footwear with grip and do not treat the ascent as an accessible route.
Walking into Bogd Khan Uul
Zaisan is a sensible launch point for a short forest walk rather than a full mountain crossing. The route towards Dugui Tsagaan follows the transition from built-up streets to larch woodland; an out-and-back section gives a useful two- to three-hour outing without committing to a longer traverse.
The Zaisan–Manzushir crossing is a full-day route and has sections with limited waymarking. Do not confuse it with the shorter Zaisan forest walk.
Getting there
From central Ulaanbaatar, a taxi is the most direct option to Zaisan. Local buses serve the wider Zaisan area, but allow extra walking to reach the hill. Traffic on the southern approaches can be slow.
The memorial itself is open-air and free to visit. Go in clear daylight for the best sense of the city’s layout; late afternoon brings lower light but more people at the viewpoint.
