Dugui Tsagaan

Dugui Tsagaan is a forest clearing and viewpoint on the northern slope of Bogd Khan Uul, south of Ulaanbaatar. It is a practical turnaround point for a short walk from the Zaisan side into the mountain’s larch forest.

What Dugui Tsagaan is

Dugui Tsagaan is a named clearing on the northern flank of Bogd Khan Uul, within the protected mountain landscape south of Ulaanbaatar. It is not a summit or a separate park: treat it as a compact forest-walk destination and a useful point on routes that continue across the mountain.

The appeal is the transition from the built-up edge of Zaisan into the cooler, wooded slope. Larch dominates this side of Bogd Khan Uul; the city drops away behind you as the track enters the forest.

The walk from Zaisan

Use the Zaisan-side approach for the simplest outing. The route climbs steadily through woodland to Dugui Tsagaan and is commonly walked as an out-and-back. Allow two to three hours at an unhurried pace for the return journey.

The path is suitable for walkers rather than technical hikers, but it is a real uphill walk. Expect uneven earth, roots and occasional rocky sections rather than paving. A shorter return walk works well: turn back whenever the climb or daylight makes that sensible.

At the clearing

Dugui Tsagaan is best understood as a pause in the forest rather than a developed attraction. Stop for the change in terrain, the larch canopy and the sense of distance from the city. Do not expect cafés, shops or extensive visitor facilities.

It is also a junction in the wider Bogd Khan Uul network. Routes can continue towards the ridge and the Manzushir side, but that is a longer undertaking than the Zaisan return walk. Do not confuse a short visit to Dugui Tsagaan with a full mountain crossing.

Getting there and timing

Reach the Zaisan area by taxi or city transport from central Ulaanbaatar, then continue on foot to the forest approach. Save an offline map before leaving the urban edge: forest paths can fork, and route markings should not be your only navigation.

Start early enough to finish in daylight. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and bring a windproof outer layer; conditions on the slope can feel markedly cooler than in the city. In wet weather, the ground under the trees becomes slippery.

Protected-slope etiquette

Bogd Khan Uul is a protected and sacred mountain landscape. Keep to established paths, take all litter out and do not light fires. Give wildlife space and avoid turning the clearing into a picnic site with amplified sound or disposable waste.
