What makes Yonehara different

Yonehara Beach is a roughly one-kilometre sweep of white sand in the Fukai area of northern Ishigaki. It sits within Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and is valued less as a resort beach than as a shore-access reef.

The draw is immediate: shallow, clear water, coral formations and tropical fish close to the sand. That proximity is exactly why care matters. This is a natural coast, not a managed lido.

Snorkelling the nearshore reef

Use the beach for close-range observation rather than a swim-out challenge. Keep enough water beneath you to float without touching the reef; at low tide, exposed or very shallow coral makes that difficult.

Take:

• A properly fitted life jacket
• Rash guard and marine shoes
• Drinking water, towel and a dry bag
• A mask and snorkel, or rented equipment where available

Do not stand on, kick or handle coral. Do not collect marine life or feed fish. The reef is the attraction, not an obstacle to cross.

A serious safety point

Yonehara has no lifeguard or protective swimming net. Tidal currents and rip currents can develop, including when the surface looks calm. Stay close to shore, do not enter alone, and do not head for the reef edge.

For first-time snorkellers and children, a guided outing is the sensible option. Skip the water altogether in strong wind, rough seas, thunderstorms, warnings or after alcohol. A short beach walk and reef view are still worthwhile when conditions are poor.

Getting there and facilities

The beach is about 25 minutes by car from Ishigaki Airport and around 30 minutes from central Ishigaki. A rental car gives the most flexibility; bus services are limited, so fix the return journey before setting out.

Beach access is free. There are small free parking areas and paid parking near the entrance, plus toilets, showers and a small shop or rental service. Capacity, prices and operating arrangements can change. Use designated parking only: roadside parking disrupts a narrow local road.

Rules that protect the coast

No fires, barbecues or fireworks are permitted, and the former campground is closed. Take all rubbish away, keep noise down and avoid smoking on the beach. If the conditions, equipment or parking are not right, change the plan rather than forcing the visit.
