Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge

Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge carries the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway across the Akashi Strait between Kobe’s Maiko district and Awaji Island. Opened in 1998, it is a three-span stiffened-truss suspension bridge measuring 3,911 metres overall. The central span between its towers is 1,991 metres, and the towers rise to about 300 metres.

The bridge is road infrastructure, not a pedestrian crossing. Treat Maiko Park on the Kobe side as the visitor base: it gives you the strongest ground-level view of the anchorage, deck, towers and cables as they run out across the strait.

The most useful close-up experience is the Maiko Marine Promenade, built inside the bridge girder on the Kobe side. This circuit-style walkway extends about 317 metres over the strait and sits roughly 47 metres above the sea. It has an observation lounge, bridge displays and sections that look down through a glass floor.

On a clear day, the view reaches across to Awaji Island, Osaka Bay and the Seto Inland Sea. The scale is clearest when you first look up from the park, then enter the promenade to see the truss and deck from within.

For bridge engineering rather than views alone, add the nearby Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center. Its models, films and displays explain the construction technology behind the bridge and the wider Honshu–Shikoku bridge system.

Arrival and layout

By train: JR Maiko Station and Sanyo Electric Railway’s Maiko-koen Station are both about a five-minute walk from the promenade and the bridge’s Kobe-side facilities. Follow signs toward Maiko Park and the sea.

By car: Paid parking is available at Maiko Park. The bridge itself is part of an expressway; use the park facilities rather than attempting to access the roadway on foot.

The exhibition center, promenade and park are close together, so this is an easy site to cover on foot. Allow around 30–60 minutes for the promenade; add time for the exhibition center.

Timing and access

The promenade normally opens 09:00–18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. During Golden Week and the summer holiday period it stays open until 19:00. It is open daily from April through September; from October through March it closes on the second Monday of each month, or the following day when that Monday is a public holiday. It also closes 29–31 December.

Adult admission is ¥250 on weekdays and ¥300 on weekends and public holidays; high-school students and younger enter free. The exposed setting can feel markedly windier than central Kobe, and the glass-floor section is avoidable if heights are not for you.
