Get your bearings

Karaköy is a working transport and commercial quarter, not a sealed-off sight. Its centre is Karaköy Square and the ferry piers on the Golden Horn side of the Bosphorus. Galata Bridge runs southwest toward Eminönü; the slope behind the square leads up into Galata and Beyoğlu.

Use the water and hill as your compass: the waterfront lies below, while Galata Tower is uphill. The narrow streets become steep quickly, so treat the district as a walk between the quay and the hill rather than a level promenade.

Walk the historic core

Start at the Karaköy tram stop and move uphill through the old financial district.

• Bankalar Caddesi (Voyvoda Caddesi): the former banking street, lined with substantial late-Ottoman commercial buildings.
• SALT Galata: housed in the former Ottoman Bank building; go in for the architecture and its cultural programme.
• Kamondo Steps: the curving Art Nouveau staircase is the most direct architectural stop on the climb toward Galata.
• Galata Tower: continue uphill for the tower and the streets around it, then descend again via Karaköy Caddesi.

This route explains Karaköy’s character better than a single landmark: port infrastructure below, finance and trade behind it, and the old Galata hill above.

Follow the waterfront west

From Rıhtım Caddesi, continue along the old docks toward Tophane. The route passes the underground Yeraltı Camii, built on the site of an earlier Eastern Roman tower, then reaches the corridor around the Nusretiye Mosque and Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.

Further west, the waterfront leads to İstanbul Modern. This is the cleanest way to combine Karaköy’s historic streets with contemporary art and a long stretch of Bosphorus-facing quay. Keep in mind that the waterfront, galleries, shops and museum operate on different schedules.

Connections and onward routes

Karaköy is one of Istanbul’s most useful interchange points.

• Ferry: use Karaköy pier for crossings to Kadıköy and Üsküdar, as well as Golden Horn routes.
• Tram: the T1 stop links Karaköy with Eminönü, Sultanahmet and Kabataş.
• Tünel: take the short funicular uphill toward the lower end of İstiklal Caddesi instead of tackling the slope on foot.
• On foot: cross Galata Bridge to Eminönü, or climb via Bankalar Caddesi and the Kamondo Steps toward Galata.

Timing and street sense

Weekday mornings suit the lanes around Bankalar Caddesi and the waterfront before commuter traffic and deliveries peak. Late afternoon works for the quay, but the area around the bridge and ferry terminal is busiest at commuting hours.

Wear shoes with grip for the hillside streets and steps. The waterfront is comparatively level; the older streets behind it are not.
