Start at the waterfront

Kadıköy’s useful centre is the waterfront: ferry piers, the M4 metro terminus, the T3 Kadıköy–Moda heritage tram and major bus stops all meet here. It is the practical arrival point from the European side and the right place to orient yourself before heading inland.

The district itself is much larger, with 21 neighbourhoods and a long Marmara coast. For a first visit, keep the focus on central Kadıköy, Bahariye and Moda; they form a coherent walk rather than a list of disconnected sights.

The market streets

Kadıköy Çarşı begins a few minutes uphill from the water. This is not one market hall but a compact grid of pedestrian lanes: fishmongers, bakers, delicatessens, spice and nut sellers, pickle shops and small restaurants share the same streets.

How to use it: walk a circuit before choosing where to eat. The lanes are close together, so it is better for grazing and browsing than for a tightly timed route. The Bull Statue at Altıyol is the main local meeting point and a clear landmark between the market and Bahariye.

Bahariye to Moda

From Altıyol, follow pedestrianised Bahariye Street south. Shops, bookshops, cafés and passages line the route, while the T3 heritage tram runs through its centre. Stop to see the façade of Süreyya Opera House, the district’s principal performance venue.

Continue into Moda for a quieter residential stretch and the Marmara waterfront. Moda Pier, designed in 1916–17 and restored for public use, has a library, book café and terrace. The coast is best treated as a walking finish, not a transport shortcut: the promenade is relatively level, while streets leading down to it can slope.

Ferries and local transport

Ferries make Kadıköy an efficient base for crossing the water. The Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü service stops first at Karaköy before continuing to Eminönü. For this route, use the pier shown for your operator: the nearby old and new piers serve different services.

• Paying: use a loaded İstanbulkart at public-transport gates. Some operators also have their own ticket arrangements.
• Rail: the M4 begins at Kadıköy; transfer at Ayrılık Çeşmesi for Marmaray.
• Short hops: use the T3 tram loop for Bahariye and Moda rather than retracing the whole walk.

Timing and street sense

Visit the market in late morning when food counters are fully set up. Leave the waterfront and Moda for later in the day, when the light is better across the Marmara. Weekends and evening ferry periods bring heavier foot traffic around the piers, market lanes and Altıyol.

For a late crossing, read the live departure board and confirm the correct pier before passing through the gate. Schedules vary by day and service; some early departures do not run on weekends or public holidays.
