The island at a glance

Bornholm has a markedly different character from much of Denmark. Granite cliffs and rocky shoreline define the north; the south opens into dunes and broad sand at Dueodde. Rønne, on the west coast, is the ferry port and the most practical arrival point. Gudhjem, Svaneke, Nexø, Hasle and Allinge-Sandvig make useful stops rather than interchangeable bases.

A first visit works best when divided by geography: give the north to cliffs and Hammershus, the south to beach and forest, and another day to the harbour towns and inland churches.

Key stops

• Hammershus: Northern Europe’s largest medieval castle ruin occupies a cliff site in the northwest. Allow time to walk the ruins and coast rather than treating it as a quick roadside stop.
• Gudhjem: A steep town above its harbour, known for smokehouses and departures to Christiansø.
• Svaneke and Nexø: East-coast harbour towns on the route south toward the beaches.
• Dueodde: Fine white sand, dunes and pine forest at the southern end of the island.
• Round churches: Østerlars, Olsker, Nyker and Nylars are the four principal examples; their compact, defensive-looking forms make strong inland detours.

Cycle Route 10

National Cycle Route 10, Bornholm Rundt, is a 104.5 km signed loop linking Rønne, Hasle, Allinge, Gudhjem, Svaneke, Nexø and Dueodde. It is mostly asphalt, but northern sections include gravel and forest tracks. A trekking, gravel or mountain bike suits the complete route best.

The northern leg through Vang and toward Hammershus is the demanding section, with climbs up to 22%. The southern and final inland return to Rønne are flatter. Strong riders can complete the loop in roughly four to five hours without stops; three to four days gives the route its proper pace. Green signs marked 10 and Cykelvej identify the way.

Arriving and moving around

The main fast ferry runs between Ystad and Rønne in about 80 minutes; additional Rønne connections operate via Køge and, seasonally, Sassnitz. Timetables vary by season.

Rønne is the logical base for ferry arrivals and has links to island bus services. BAT buses carry bicycles free of charge, which is useful for shortening a route stage or returning after a headwind-heavy day. Bike hire is available in Rønne, Nexø, Gudhjem and Allinge.

Practical rhythm

Coastal wind can change the difficulty of an otherwise manageable ride. Ride Route 10 clockwise from Rønne via Hasle if you want the hard northern terrain early and the flatter southern return later. Pack water for longer rural stretches, and plan a separate day for Christiansø rather than trying to combine it with a full island circuit.
