Sandkaj Swimming Zone
Sandkaj is a marked harbour swimming zone on the waterfront of Århusgadekvarteret in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn district. Its timber deck, open salt water and deep swimming area make it a direct, urban alternative to a conventional pool.
The place
Sandkaj is an official bathing zone at Sandkaj 30 in Nordhavn, on the newer waterfront of Århusgadekvarteret. It is not a sandy beach or a contained pool: the marked 80-by-40-metre area sits directly in Copenhagen Harbour beside a timber quay.
The setting is a working-piece-of-city waterfront rather than a park. The boardwalk is shared by swimmers, walkers and cyclists, with cafés and the neighbourhood immediately behind it.
Swimming setup
Broad deck steps lead down to the water. Depth reaches six to seven metres, so this is a place for confident swimmers, not for paddling. The salt-water zone includes:
- Platforms for water access
- A small jumping platform
- Two 60-metre swimming lanes
- Sandkaj Dipping Zone, a fixed-bottom pool within the bathing area
The site also has step-free access along the promenade, an accessible toilet and nearby accessible parking at Göteborg Plads. Sauna and changing facilities are for Nordhavn IF members, so do not count on public changing rooms.
Hours and supervision
Sandkaj is open daily, year-round, from 06:00 to 22:00. Lifeguards are present daily from 1 June to 31 August, 10:00–18:00. Outside those times, swimming is at your own risk.
Swim only within the marked zone. Harbour currents can range from weak to strong and may change direction. The lanes can also be allocated to clubs, so use the current lane schedule if you intend to swim lengths.
Water quality and conditions
Water quality is monitored, and the zone has a warning light for poor conditions. Heavy rain can trigger sewer overflows into the harbour and temporary bacterial contamination; obey the warning light, flags and closures. Recent annual classifications have been excellent, but that does not override a live warning.
Summer is the practical time for a longer swim; the facility remains available for cold-water dips through the rest of the year.
Getting there
Use Nordhavn station as the public-transport anchor, then walk into Århusgadekvarteret to Sandkaj. The address is Sandkaj 30, 2150 Nordhavn. Arrive ready to swim, bring a towel, and treat the timber deck as a public promenade as well as a bathing facility.
