Chughureti, Tbilisi
Chughureti is a left-bank neighbourhood in central Tbilisi, centred on Marjanishvili and Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue. It combines the former German settlement of New Tbilisi, performance venues, residential streets and a strong eating scene.
Orientation
Chughureti sits across the Mtkvari from Tbilisi’s old centre. Its useful visitor core runs from Marjanishvili metro and square along Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue, then through the side streets toward Fabrika. This is a working neighbourhood as much as a visitor district: look beyond the avenue’s restored frontages for courtyards, apartment houses and small local businesses.
Aghmashenebeli Avenue follows the line of Neu Tiflis, a settlement founded by Swabian German craftspeople in the early 19th century. The avenue and its adjoining streets retain traces of that expansion in European-influenced façades, gateways and older residential buildings.
Walk the avenue and side streets
Start at Marjanishvili Square and walk the pedestrian-friendly stretch of Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue. Pause to look up: balconies, plasterwork and entrance halls are often the real architectural interest, rather than any single landmark.
For a more specific stop, number 36 is a 1903 commercial apartment house with plant decoration, metal balconies and a painted entrance. The avenue also leads to the Art Palace at 6 Ia Kargareteli Street, whose collections cover Georgian theatre, music, cinema and choreography.
Theatre and contemporary culture
The Kote Marjanishvili State Academic Drama Theatre, at 8 Marjanishvili Street, is the neighbourhood’s clearest landmark. Its building opened as the Zubalashvili People’s House in 1909; the theatre company moved here from Kutaisi in 1930. Check the programme if you want a performance, but the façade alone makes a worthwhile stop on the square.
Continue to Fabrika on Egnate Ninoshvili Street. This former Soviet sewing factory is now a multi-use compound with a courtyard, cafés and bars, studios, shops, coworking and a hostel. It is best treated as a place to browse or pause, not as a conventional museum.
Eating in Chughureti
Aghmashenebeli and the streets around Marjanishvili offer a practical range: inexpensive canteens, bakeries, casual Georgian restaurants and newer dining rooms. This is a good area to seek out mountain-style Georgian cooking alongside standard Tbilisi favourites.
For khinkali, consider fillings beyond meat: potato, nadughi fresh cheese and aged cheese appear on local menus. Order deliberately rather than assuming every venue serves every variation. The avenue’s international and Georgian options make it easy to combine a simple lunch with a more substantial evening meal.
Getting around
Marjanishvili is on Metro Line 1 and is the simplest arrival point for the square and the southern section of Aghmashenebeli Avenue. The station is deep underground, reached by long escalators. From there, the theatre and avenue are close on foot; Fabrika is farther into the neighbourhood but still walkable.
Use walking for the historic core. Traffic remains present on the non-pedestrian streets, so keep the avenue’s quieter walking sections separate from road crossings.
