Sri Vishnu Mandir

Sri Vishnu Mandir is a Hindu temple at Koningstraat 31–33 in the Centrum area of Paramaribo. Opened in 1949, it is a key place of worship in Suriname’s Sanatani tradition.

Orientation

Sri Vishnu Mandir stands on Koningstraat 31–33 in Paramaribo’s Centrum area. The temple institution opened in 1949; the present, highly visible building dates from the early 1970s. Its orange domes and boldly coloured exterior make it one of the street’s clearest landmarks.

This is a functioning Hindu place of worship, not a museum display. Its setting also makes it useful for understanding the distinct traditions within Paramaribo’s Hindu community. Arya Dewaker, a temple of the Arya Samaj movement, is about 200 metres northwest, but the two follow notably different approaches to worship.

What makes this mandir distinct

Sri Vishnu Mandir belongs to the orthodox Sanatani tradition. Image-based devotion is central here: representations of deities, puja rituals, offerings and prayers form the focus of religious life. A pandit leads prayers and ceremonial worship.

That distinguishes it from Arya Samaj practice, where worship centres on the Vedas and a formless God rather than deity images. Do not treat the nearby temples as interchangeable stops; Sri Vishnu Mandir offers the image-based Sanatani side of Paramaribo’s Hindu religious landscape.

The building and its role

Pause outside to take in the composition of the temple: its saturated façade, ornamental details and orange domes are the strongest architectural features. The current structure was built for a long-established congregation in and around Koningstraat.

The mandir remains active beyond regular worship. Its premises have hosted devotional observances, prayer, religious teaching and community activities, including gatherings connected with the preparation and offering of prashad, consecrated food.

Visiting respectfully

Approach this as an active sacred site. Keep clothing modest, speak quietly and follow directions from temple staff or worshippers. If a service is under way, observe without interrupting it. Ask before photographing people, ceremonies, shrines or interior spaces.

Published visitor hours are not reliably established. For an interior visit or to attend a service, arrange or confirm access directly with the Sanatan Dharm Maha Sabha Suriname rather than relying on map listings.

Getting there

Use Koningstraat 31–33, Centrum, Paramaribo for navigation. The mapped location is at approximately 5.81855, -55.17313. The temple is close to Arya Dewaker, but the Sri Vishnu Mandir’s orange domes provide the right visual check that you have reached the correct building.
