Sharq Fish Market
Sharq Fish Market is Kuwait City’s waterfront fish market in the Sharq district, where local and imported seafood is sold and daily fish auctions continue during redevelopment.
What it is
Sharq Fish Market is a working seafood market on Kuwait City’s Sharq waterfront. It is part of the city’s maritime trade rather than a staged food attraction: shoppers come for fish, shrimp and other Gulf catch, while traders handle wholesale and retail sales.
The original market hall is a recognizable building, with tiled murals on its exterior. It is currently being redeveloped, but the trade has not stopped.
What to see and buy
The point of a visit is the catch on the counters and the rhythm of the market, not browsing souvenirs. Stalls carry local and imported seafood; availability and prices change with landings and season.
Look for familiar Kuwaiti market names including:
- zubaidi (silver pomfret), a prized local fish;
- hamour (grouper);
- sobaity (seabream);
- naqaor (grunt) and newaibi (croaker);
- local shrimp in different sizes.
The daily fish auction continues twice a day, in the morning and evening. It is the market’s most active operation, so keep clear of staff, stock and moving trolleys rather than treating the trading floor as a photo set.
Current layout and access
Important: the main hall is under renovation. Sales and auctions have moved to a temporary, purpose-equipped hall beside the existing market, with 160 operating stalls. Follow the temporary entrance and on-site directions; the circulation, parking access and stall arrangement are not the usual layout.
The redevelopment is intended to upgrade infrastructure and services, improve entry and exit routes, and expand the permanent market from 214 to more than 240 stalls. Until the work finishes, use the temporary market as the destination rather than expecting access to the old hall.
Timing your visit
Go early if you want the clearest view of the day’s seafood selection and a more businesslike market atmosphere. Go around an auction period if the trading itself is your interest; times can shift operationally, so confirm the day’s schedule locally on arrival.
This is a food market, not a restaurant. Buy seafood only if you have a practical plan for keeping it chilled and cooking it. For visitors without a kitchen, the useful visit is a short walk through the active stalls and auction area, then onward to the waterfront or nearby Sharq district.
