Jabal al-Weibdeh

Jabal al-Weibdeh is a historic hill neighbourhood immediately above downtown Amman, Jordan. Its older houses, cultural spaces and steep public stairways make it a practical link between Al-Balad and the city’s arts scene.

Read the hill

Jabal al-Weibdeh—also rendered Luweibdeh—is a residential neighbourhood on one of central Amman’s hills, west of Al-Balad. It developed in the early twentieth century, and its compact streets still combine limestone houses, apartment buildings, small gardens and long views across the downtown valley.

This is not a single attraction with gates. Treat it as a walkable district: look for the older building fabric, then use its cultural institutions and stairways as anchors.

Key stops

Darat al Funun is the clearest introduction. Six historic buildings from the 1920s stand alongside an archaeological site in the gardens; the complex hosts exhibitions, talks, films, workshops, a library and archives. Its entrances are on Nadeem al-Mallah Street and Moh’d Ali al-Saadi Street.

Paris Circle is a useful orientation point near the hill’s centre. From here, take the smaller streets rather than treating the district as a drive-through.

The character of Weibdeh lies as much in its built setting as in individual venues. Older houses have been adapted for galleries, cafés and cultural work, but the surrounding lanes remain residential. Keep voices low outside homes and do not photograph private interiors or doorways without permission.

The Al-Kalha connection

Al-Kalha Stair is the direct pedestrian route between Jabal al-Weibdeh and downtown. It runs from King Hussein Street up to Nimr al-Idwan Street near Darat al Funun and dates to the 1920s. The stairway was formerly called al-Manha; its present name has been used since the 1930s.

Use it to understand Amman’s topography: Al-Balad sits below, Weibdeh rises above it. The stairs are a public route with shops and cultural spaces along the way, not a museum exhibit. Street art and businesses can change; the important constant is the climb and its role as an everyday connection.

Plan the walk

  • From downtown: Begin at King Hussein Street and climb Al-Kalha Stair. This is the demanding direction but gives the clearest transition from market valley to hill.
  • From Weibdeh: Start around Paris Circle or Darat al Funun, then descend the stairs to Al-Balad. It is easier on the lungs and delivers you into downtown.
  • From Rainbow Street: Do not expect a direct stair connection. Rainbow Street is on neighbouring Jabal Amman; cross the valley before heading up to Weibdeh.

Access and pace

Wear shoes with grip. Al-Kalha is steep and has no step-free route; use a taxi to reach either end if stairs are unsuitable. Allow time to pause rather than trying to cover Weibdeh and downtown at street level in one fast circuit.

Darat al Funun is generally open Saturday through Thursday, with closures in August and on public holidays; its programme and hours can vary.
