Rhine Falls

What you are looking at

Rhine Falls is a wide, high-volume waterfall rather than a sheer mountain drop. The High Rhine breaks over a rock ledge 23 metres high and about 150 metres wide, creating several powerful channels around the rocks in the river. It is one of Europe’s largest waterfalls by volume.

The falls sit between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zurich. Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Schlössli Wörth are on the north bank; Schloss Laufen stands above the south bank. The two sides deliver distinctly different visits, so choose your arrival point deliberately.

Choose your viewpoint

North bank — Schlössli Wörth: This is the practical choice for the basin-level view and boat departures. Access to the Rhine Falls basin here is free. Stand close to the water, then look upstream towards the full sweep of the falls and the central rock.

South bank — Schloss Laufen: Come here for the elevated panorama. The Panorama Trail runs down from the castle towards the falls, with the Belvedere platform giving a broad, face-on view. Lower platforms, including Känzeli and Fischetz, sit directly over the water and receive heavy spray. Access to the castle-side platforms is ticketed.

The two banks are worth combining if you have time. The railway bridge upstream provides the link on foot; boats also make river crossings when operating.

Get close by boat

Boat trips leave from the north bank and operate seasonally. The defining option is the rock trip: it lands on the central Rheinfallfelsen, where a steep stair climb reaches a small viewing platform above the water. It is the closest legal vantage point, but it is not step-free.

Short basin circuits give the low-angle, spray-heavy view without the climb. Other trips continue downstream along the calmer Rhine. Boat operations depend on weather and water level; wear a waterproof outer layer for any close-range trip.

Arrival and access

Two rail stops put you close to the site:

• Neuhausen Rheinfall for the north bank and Schlössli Wörth.
• Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall for the castle, Panorama Trail and south-bank platforms.

From Schaffhausen, bus services to Neuhausen Zentrum leave roughly a 10-minute walk to the falls. Drivers can use paid parking on both banks; the north-bank GPS address is Rheinfallquai 32, Neuhausen am Rheinfall, while the south-bank approach is signed for Schloss Laufen in Dachsen.

The north bank is the stronger option for wheelchair users: Neuhausen Rheinfall station is barrier-free, with a lift down to the basin. The south bank has step-free access to the panorama lift, Panorama Trail and Belvedere platform, but not to the basin or boat pier.

Timing and practical details

The falls themselves are accessible around the clock throughout the year. The water flow changes with the season: roughly 600 cubic metres per second in summer and 250 in winter. Boat services and some facilities do not run year-round.

Visit in daylight for the platforms and river colour. Bring a rain jacket for lower platforms and boats; the spray is part of the experience, not a light mist. Dogs may enter the site, but rules differ by boat route.
