Emmental

Emmental is the pastoral Emme and Ilfis valley region in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. Its rolling pastureland, monumental farmhouses and Emmentaler AOP cheese define a landscape best explored slowly.

Orientation

Emmental is a broad rural region rather than a single town. It occupies the valleys and hills around the Emme and Ilfis rivers in the canton of Bern. Burgdorf anchors the northern side; Langnau im Emmental is the main settlement in the upper valley. Between them, steep-sided folds, wooded patches and working pasture give the region its distinctive shape.

The signature buildings are the large Emmental farmhouses: deep, steep roofs project far beyond the walls, a practical form made for an agricultural landscape. Treat the region as a sequence of villages, ridges and farm country, not as a checklist of urban sights.

Cheese country

Emmentaler AOP is inseparable from the valley’s dairy farming. For the clearest introduction, go to the Emmentaler Show Dairy in Affoltern im Emmental. Its self-guided King’s Way explains the cheese’s production and history, leads into the ageing cellar and finishes with a tasting.

The site also preserves dairies from several generations. A cheese shop stocks Emmentaler AOP at different ages, while the restaurant focuses on regional cooking. The venue is wheelchair accessible, making it a dependable all-weather stop.

Hills, views and villages

The point of being here is the terrain: pasture crests, narrow folds in the land and isolated farmsteads. Walks and rides connect small settlements rather than a continuous built-up valley.

Useful landmarks include:

  • Napf, a high viewpoint in the upper Emmental area.
  • Moosegg near Lauperswil and Lueg near Kaltacker, both established viewpoints over the hills and towards the Bernese Alps.
  • Burgdorf, for its old town and castle; Langnau, for a practical base deeper in the valley.

On foot and by bike

Walking suits short ridge-and-valley outings as well as full-day routes. Expect sustained climbs: the scenery may look gentle from a distance, but the lanes and paths repeatedly rise from the valley floor.

E-bikes are especially useful. The Hcgu Himu network has more than 600 kilometres of signposted routes through the region, linking viewpoints, farms and country inns. The Heart Route also crosses the Emmental. Use an e-bike if you want to cover several ridges in one day; conventional cycling is more demanding than the map suggests.

Getting around

Approach by rail through Burgdorf or Langnau im Emmental; local buses extend into smaller valleys and villages. A car gives the widest reach for dispersed trailheads and viewpoints, but many rural roads are narrow and winding.

For the show dairy, take the train to Hasle-Rüegsau or Huttwil, then a bus to Affoltern i.E., Dorf; it is a short walk from the stop. Base yourself near a station if you intend to combine walking with public transport.
