Rudas Thermal Bath

Rudas is a working Ottoman-era thermal bath on Budapest’s Buda bank, beside Elisabeth Bridge. Its 16th-century domed pool is paired with modern wellness facilities and a rooftop pool above the Danube.

Why Rudas matters

Rudas is not a period-piece bathhouse: its Ottoman core is still used for bathing. Built between 1566 and 1572 under Sokollu Mustafa Pasha, the Turkish bath centres on an octagonal thermal pool beneath a roughly 10-metre dome. Eight stone pillars carry the dome, while circular openings in its roof bring muted light down to the water.

This is the part to come for. Smaller pools around the central basin offer different temperatures, so the visit naturally works as a slow circuit rather than a swim.

The bath layout

The historic Turkish chamber is only one part of the complex. Rudas also has:

  • Wellness area: thermal pools, steam and sauna facilities.
  • Swimming pool: a separate pool for swimming rather than soaking.
  • Rooftop pool: an open-air thermal pool looking across the Danube towards Pest and Elisabeth Bridge.
  • Drinking hall: thermal water is available from the drinking fountain at limited times.

The contrast is deliberate: move from the low-lit stone dome to the contemporary wellness wing, then finish on the roof if your ticket includes that area.

Getting there

Rudas stands at Döbrentei tér 9 on the Buda side of Elisabeth Bridge, at the foot of Gellért Hill. Tram lines 19 and 41 stop nearby; buses 7, 8E, 108E, 110 and 112 also serve the area. It is an easy stop when walking the Buda riverfront or crossing from central Pest via Elisabeth Bridge.

Allow two to three hours if using both the Turkish bath and wellness areas. The rooftop pool is more exposed to demand than the interior pools, particularly at weekends.

Sessions, access and etiquette

The Turkish bath has a non-mixed weekday timetable. Tuesday is women-only; men-only sessions operate on Monday morning, Wednesday, and parts of Thursday and Friday. Mixed sessions require swimwear and run at set times; the Turkish bath is mixed on weekends. The wellness area has its own opening hours.

Rudas does not admit visitors under 14. Cash desks close one hour before closing, and pool and sauna areas must be vacated 20 minutes before the bath closes. Friday and Saturday night bathing runs from 22:00 to 03:00 and tickets are sold online only.

Bring swimwear, a towel and non-slip sandals. Accessibility warning: the bath is currently not accessible to visitors with disabilities.

Timing your visit

For the Ottoman room itself, choose the session that matches your access needs rather than arriving on spec. Monday has the latest standard closing time, at 22:00; Tuesday to Sunday standard hours generally end at 20:00. On public holidays, weekend hours apply.
