Király Baths
Király Baths is a 16th-century Ottoman thermal bath at Fő utca 84 in Budapest’s Buda side. Its historic bath complex is closed indefinitely, but its domed core remains a significant piece of the city’s bath heritage.
What Király is
Király Baths is an Ottoman-era thermal bath in Budapest’s District II, on Fő utca in Buda. It was begun in 1565 by Arslan Pasha and completed by his successor, Sokollu Mustafa. The building is notable for an unusually intact Turkish bath core: a central, octagonal pool hall beneath a low stone dome.
The bath was deliberately built away from a spring, within Buda’s fortified area. Thermal water was brought in from the Lukács Baths area through a pipeline, so bathing could continue during a siege.
The architecture to know
The Ottoman hall is the essential feature. Its dome rests on massive supports around the octagonal pool, with small openings admitting daylight. Later alterations wrapped this core in other periods of the city’s history.
After the König family acquired the property in 1796, they gave the bath its Hungarian name—király means “king”—and reshaped it while retaining the older fabric. Baroque elements and a classical wing make the building a layered rather than purely Ottoman monument. The bath was badly damaged in the Second World War and fully restored in 1950.
Current access
Closed indefinitely. Király is not operating as a bath and no reopening date has been announced. Do not plan on buying admission, using pools or entering the historic rooms.
The closure is tied to the building’s condition and the need for a major reconstruction. Plans have discussed conserving the historic Ottoman section while updating the complex, but this remains a restoration project rather than a visitor facility.
Finding the building
Address: Fő utca 84, 1027 Budapest. The complex stands at the Fő utca–Ganz utca corner in Buda’s Víziváros area; the Ottoman bath structure is identifiable from Ganz utca by its domed form.
Public transport: Bus routes 9 and 109 and tram 19 serve the area. It is also within walking distance of Batthyány tér, a useful Buda-side transport hub.
How to treat a visit
At present, Király is an architectural stop rather than a bathing stop. Keep expectations to the exterior and the building’s position in the streetscape; access to its central pool hall is not available. Its value lies in understanding how a working Ottoman hammam was later enclosed by Baroque and classical additions, not in substituting another bath for this specific site.
