Telliskivi, Tallinn
Telliskivi is Tallinn’s converted railway-factory quarter beside Balti Jaam, on the edge of Kalamaja. Its former industrial buildings now hold photography, galleries, design shops, theatres, cafés and restaurants.
Orientation
Telliskivi refers to the former industrial area west of Balti Jaam railway station, now centred on Telliskivi Creative City at Telliskivi 60A. The site sits between Kalamaja and Pelgulinn, within easy walking distance of Tallinn’s Old Town. It is a compact, walkable cluster of old factory buildings, yards and internal lanes rather than a conventional shopping centre.
The quarter grew beside the railway line that linked Tallinn and St Petersburg from 1870. Railway workshops once maintained rolling stock here; later industrial production continued through the Soviet era. Redevelopment began in 2007, and the first long-term tenant arrived in 2009. The rough brick and factory-scale spaces are part of the point: they have been adapted, not erased.
What to see
Start by walking the courtyards and lanes. Large murals, smaller street-art works and changing outdoor installations make the buildings themselves an open-air gallery.
Fotografiska Tallinn is the district’s major cultural anchor, with regularly changing photography exhibitions. Its café and restaurant can be visited without buying an exhibition ticket.
Other useful stops include:
- Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Centre for documentary photography.
- Telliskivi Creative City Gallery and other small gallery spaces threaded through the shop streets.
- Von Krahl Theatre and the Independent Dance Stage for a performance if the programme suits.
- Independent studios and shops for Estonian fashion, objects, ceramics and design.
Exhibitions, shops and performance schedules change; treat the quarter as a place to explore on foot, not a checklist of fixed attractions.
Eating and shopping
Telliskivi has a broad spread of cafés, bars and restaurants in the old halls. F-hoone, in a former foundry hall, is a long-running restaurant; other venues cover vegan, gluten-free, Indian and French cooking. The mix makes this a practical lunch or evening stop rather than only a cultural detour.
For local design, focus on the small stores rather than souvenir shopping. Several businesses sell Estonian-made clothing, accessories and homeware, while some specialise in reuse, ecological goods or refillable dry products. The tenant mix changes, so a slow circuit of the pedestrian lanes works better than heading for a single flagship store.
Getting there and getting around
From Balti Jaam, Telliskivi Creative City is about a three-minute walk. Tram lines 1 and 2 stop at Telliskivi, roughly 200 metres away. From the Old Town, walk west past the station and market area.
The outdoor quarter is free to enter and open for walking year-round. Individual venues set their own hours and charge separately where applicable. Paid parking is available around the site; arriving on foot, by tram or by bike is simpler.
Timing and access
Come in daytime for galleries, shops and murals; stay later for restaurants, bars or performances. Cultural events run throughout the year, and the regular Saturday flea market can make the area busier.
The main restaurant and theatre spaces are wheelchair-friendly, and ramps serve both entrances to the Indie Shopping Street. As this is a working complex of separate businesses, access inside individual shops and older buildings can vary.
