Põhjala Tehas
Põhjala Tehas is a repurposed former rubber-factory complex at Marati 5 in Kopli, northwest Tallinn. Its industrial buildings now hold independent food spots, studios, shops, galleries and event spaces.
What it is
Põhjala Tehas is a working creative quarter rather than a conventional museum or a single attraction. The site occupies a former rubber factory on the Kopli Peninsula, and its weathered façades, large hangars and courtyard retain the industrial scale of the complex.
Come to look around the public outdoor areas, eat or drink, browse independent studios and catch whatever is on the current programme. The mix changes, so treat it as a place to explore rather than a checklist.
The factory setting
The industrial history is the point. Rubber production operated here during the Soviet period; the buildings have since been adapted for contemporary use without erasing their rough factory character. The historic hangars are the most striking structures and are used for exhibitions, performances, markets and larger events.
Look for:
- The hangars: vast former industrial spaces, used when programming allows.
- The courtyard and main route: the easiest way to orient yourself between cafés, studios and event rooms.
- Independent makers: studio shops, galleries and small creative businesses are part of the everyday fabric of the site.
Food, drink and browsing
Põhjala Tehas is useful even without an event. Karjase Sai is the on-site bakery for sourdough rye bread, pastries and daytime coffee. Its bakery is also used by Barbarea for sourdough pizza in the evening. Elsewhere in the complex, cafés, a coffee roaster, bars, a brewery, a book café and food businesses make it easy to stop for longer.
Individual tenants keep their own hours. Daytime is best for bakeries, coffee and retail; later visits make more sense for dinner, beer or programmed events.
Events and timing
Concerts, exhibitions, workshops and performances run across the year. In warmer months, the yard can host markets, festivals and open-air film screenings. A scheduled event is the best reason to enter spaces that may otherwise be closed, especially the hangars.
The grounds can be visited freely, but do not assume every studio, gallery or hall is open. Check the day’s programme before making a special trip for a particular tenant or event.
Getting there
The address is Marati 5, Kopli. Tram lines 1 and 2 and buses 32 and 72 provide public-transport access; the Marati stop is a short walk away. Cycling is straightforward via the Stroomi light-traffic route.
If driving, use the designated parking areas at Ankru 10, Marati 5/2 and Marati 5a rather than treating the courtyards as general parking. Wear sturdy shoes: this is an old industrial complex with uneven outdoor surfaces.
