Beddagana Wetland Park

An 18-hectare urban wetland park in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, beside Diyawanna Oya. Boardwalks, viewing points and quiet trails make it a focused stop for wetland birds and waterside habitat.

What this park is

Beddagana Wetland Park is a managed urban wetland on the Diyawanna Oya floodplain in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte. It is not a landscaped lakeside garden: ponds, marsh, scrub, seasonally wet grassland and the lake edge form a working wetland habitat within the capital.

The park’s paths and decks give access without sending visitors into the marsh. Its main purpose is habitat protection as well as public access, so treat it as a wildlife site rather than a place for loud recreation.

Walk the wetland

The visit is built around marked trails, timber boardwalks and observation points. Move slowly and stop at clearings rather than trying to cover every path quickly.

  • Duck Pond and tower: a useful place to scan open water and reed edges from above.
  • Diyawanna Walk: follows the lake margin toward a timber deck over the water.
  • Floating deck: the park’s strongest wide-angle view, looking across Diyawanna Oya and wetland vegetation.
  • Butterfly Walk: a planted stretch that adds flowering vegetation to the wetland route.

Allow roughly two hours if birdwatching is the point. The terrain is largely flat, but paths and boardwalks can be slippery after rain; use shoes with grip.

Birds and wildlife

Bring binoculars. The mix of open water, low vegetation and trees supports waterbirds and woodland species in a small area. White-breasted waterhens, herons, egrets, kingfishers, swamphens and cormorants are among birds recorded here. Bird activity is strongest soon after the 06:00 opening, when the heat and visitor numbers are lower.

Keep voices low, do not use call playback, and stay on the marked route. These limits protect nesting and feeding areas, including habitat close to the boardwalks.

Arrival and access

The entrance is at 139 Rampart Road, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte 10100. A taxi or tuk-tuk from Colombo or central Kotte is the most direct option; local buses serving Beddagana stop on the south side of the park.

The park is generally open daily from 06:00 to 18:00. Published entry rates are LKR 200 for a local adult and LKR 100 for a local child; foreign adult and child admission is LKR 2,000 and LKR 1,000 respectively, before any applicable taxes. Photography sessions and events carry separate charges.

Practical timing

Arrive at opening for birdwatching and softer light on the boardwalk. Late afternoon is a workable alternative, but leave enough time to exit before closing. Carry water and insect repellent; this is a humid wetland and there is little reason to hurry through it.
