Zhangye Danxia
Zhangye Danxia is the banded-rock landscape of the Colorful Hills Scenic Area near Zhangye in Gansu, north-west China. Its rounded ridges expose red, orange, yellow, grey and greenish sedimentary layers.
The landscape
Zhangye Danxia is the visitor name for the Colorful Hills section of Zhangye UNESCO Global Geopark, near the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains in Gansu. It is a wide field of low, folded ridges rather than a single mountain. The appeal is the exposed layering: red and purplish-red beds alternate with yellow-green, grey-green and dark bands.
The rocks were laid down in ancient river-and-lake environments during the Early Cretaceous. Later tectonic movement folded and tilted the strata; wind, water, frost and gravity cut the soft sandstone, siltstone and mudstone into the rounded hills visible today.
Use the viewing platforms
The standard visit is a managed circuit of boardwalks and viewing terraces. The internal sightseeing shuttle is compulsory; private cars do not circulate between the main stops.
- Sea of Clouds Platform: broad views across layered ridges and valleys.
- Brocade Platform: a closer read of the tight, ribbon-like bands.
- Rainbow Glow Platform: the practical final stop for the most saturated late-afternoon colour.
Allow three to five hours for the core route. There are steps at the platforms, but this is primarily a shuttle-and-boardwalk visit rather than a hike. Do not skip a stop casually: the shuttle route generally runs one way, so returning can mean completing the circuit again.
Time the light
Low-angle light is the difference between a good view and a flat one. Arrive early enough to complete the circuit and be at Rainbow Glow Platform well before sunset. Its west-facing outlook gives the ridges stronger red and orange tones late in the day.
Morning is quieter and cooler in colour. After rain, clearer air and damp rock can make the bands read more strongly. Midday is useful for orientation but usually gives weaker contrast. In summer and on public holidays, the sunset platform is the busiest point of the circuit.
Getting there
The Colorful Hills Scenic Area lies roughly 40 km from central Zhangye. A car or taxi is the most flexible option, especially if staying through sunset; arrange the return journey before entering. Seasonal buses may run from Zhangye, but their final departures do not reliably suit a late exit.
For navigation, use the park’s North Gate and confirm the ticketed entrance before leaving Zhangye. Zhangye is served by rail, including high-speed services at Zhangye West station; the park itself is reached by road.
Access and ground rules
Operating hours, timed sessions and ticket packages change with season. Buy the standard admission through the official booking channel and check whether the required shuttle is included in the displayed price.
Stay on marked boardwalks and viewing areas. The coloured slopes are protected, easily damaged sedimentary formations; climbing barriers or walking onto the hills is prohibited. Carry water, sun protection and a warm outer layer for late afternoon: the platforms are exposed to strong sun and wind.
