Icherisheher, Baku Old City
Icherisheher is Baku’s compact walled old city on the Caspian side of central Baku. Its lanes, fortifications, mosques, caravanserais and bathhouses frame the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.
Orientation
Icherisheher—literally the Inner City—is the historic core of Baku, enclosed by surviving medieval fortifications. It is a living district rather than a single museum: homes, cafés, shops and small museums occupy a tight network of lanes within the walls.
The walled city, the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs have been inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. Much of the defensive wall dates to the 12th century; the whole ensemble shows layers of Shirvani, Persian, Ottoman, Russian and earlier cultural influence.
The essential sights
Start at the Maiden Tower (Qız Qalası), near the lower, seaward side of the old city. This striking stone cylinder is 28 metres high, with eight internal levels. Its final form was completed in the 12th century, while older structures lie beneath it. It is Baku’s defining landmark and now a museum.
Continue uphill to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a 15th-century royal complex built after the Shirvanshahs moved their capital from Shamakhi to Baku. Allow time for the courtyards, Divankhana, mausoleums, mosque, bathhouse remains and carved local limestone. The palace is the district’s most substantial architectural ensemble.
Also look for:
- Fortress walls and gates, particularly the Double Gates, which give the clearest sense of the former defensive perimeter.
- Bukhara and Multani caravanserais, reminders of merchant traffic through medieval Baku.
- Mosques and hammams, including the Muhammad Mosque and the Underground Hammam.
Walking the old city
Treat Icherisheher as a walk, not a checklist. The narrow streets are short, irregular and easy to loop back through; use the Maiden Tower and palace as orientation points. The lower streets lead toward the waterfront, while the palace occupies higher ground.
A practical route is: enter by the Double Gates, wander down toward the Maiden Tower, then work back uphill through side streets to the palace. Reserve extra time for the lanes between these anchors; the value of the district lies as much in its street pattern and stone fabric as in its headline monuments.
Access and timing
The old city itself is an open area, entered through gates including the Double Gate and Salyan Gate. The major monuments charge admission. The Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs are open daily from 10:00 to 19:00.
For a quieter circuit, walk the streets before visiting the interiors. The tourist information centre at 55 Boyuk Gala Street is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00 and can arrange local orientation and guide services.
What to notice
Icherisheher is not frozen at one date. Medieval walls and monuments sit alongside later residential buildings, and the old city remains inhabited. Keep attention on the details that explain its former urban life: carved portals, enclosed courtyards, stone arches, mosque minarets, caravanserai entrances and the changing width of the lanes.
Inside religious buildings, dress and behaviour should be respectful. Do not climb, sit on or mark historic masonry.
