The road at a glance

Transfăgărășan is the name used for DN7C, a north–south road across the Făgăraș Mountains. The full national road runs about 151 km from Bascov, near Pitești, to DN1 near Cârțișoara; the high mountain crossing is roughly 90 km. It joins Wallachia with Transylvania and reaches 2,042 m at the Capra–Bâlea Tunnel.

Built from 1970 to 1974 as a strategic military route, it is infrastructure first and a scenic drive second. That explains its direct line across the range, viaducts, sharp bends and five tunnels.

Choose your direction

From the north: Approach from Sibiu via Cârțișoara. The road climbs through forest past Bâlea Waterfall, then emerges into the open glacial bowl below Bâlea Lake. This is the classic sequence of stacked hairpins.

From the south: Start near Curtea de Argeș. DN7C passes the Vidraru Dam and reservoir before climbing through the Capra valley towards the high pass. This side is longer, more wooded and gradually builds towards the alpine section.

Allow a full day for a through-drive with stops. The route is paved, but the bends, stopped traffic and weather make it a slow road rather than a distance to dispatch.

Key stops on DN7C

• Bâlea Lake: A glacial lake beside the summit area and the natural midpoint of the crossing. It is the main place for a short walk and a look across the cirque.
• Capra–Bâlea Tunnel: The 884-metre tunnel runs under the ridge between the Bâlea and Capra glacial valleys. It is the road’s high-point passage; use headlights and keep moving through it.
• Bâlea Waterfall: On the northern approach, below the lake. In winter, the cable car from Bâlea Cascadă provides access to the lake when the upper road is shut.
• Vidraru Dam and reservoir: The major southern-side stop, where the road follows the reservoir before the serious climb begins.

Season and access

The high sector between Piscu Negru and Bâlea Cascadă closes over winter because of snow and avalanche conditions. The opening window is generally late June or July to late October, but dates depend on conditions and temporary weather closures can occur even in season.

At Bâlea, bring a warm layer and waterproof outer layer in any month. Fog, wind and rain can arrive quickly above 2,000 m. Fill the tank before the climb; there is no fuel on the upper section.

Driving discipline

Use marked lay-bys and parking areas rather than stopping on a bend. Drive steadily, leave room for oncoming traffic and use engine braking on sustained descents. Bears may appear near the road and car parks: stay in the vehicle, keep your distance and never feed them.
