Ægisíða Coastal Path

Ægisíða is a seafront path in Vesturbær, west Reykjavík, running beside Faxaflói Bay. It combines an easy urban walk with public art, old fishing sheds and open water views towards Álftanes.

Orientation

Ægisíða is the coastal stretch reached by following Hofsvallagata south from Vesturbæjarlaug, the neighbourhood swimming pool. Here Reykjavík’s residential Vesturbær meets the water: grass, a broad paved path and the low shoreline replace the centre’s harbourfront.

The route looks across Faxaflói Bay towards Álftanes. Bessastaðir, the presidential residence, is visible across the water in clear conditions. Benches along the shore make this a straightforward pause rather than a destination requiring a full itinerary.

What to see

At the entrance to the shore stands Rescue from Sea Peril (Björgun úr sjávarháska), a bronze work by Ásmundur Sveinsson. The sculpture depicts a rescue from rough water, an apt marker for this working-coast landscape.

Continue along the path to spot the small baiting sheds and fishing structures. They recall the shore’s use by local fishers and give the otherwise residential waterfront its historical texture. The appeal here is restrained: water, weather, public art and the evidence of a former fishing shore.

The walk

The signed route is a 3 km return walk from Vesturbæjarlaug. Allow 30–60 minutes at an unhurried pace:

  • Start at the pool car park.
  • Walk down Hofsvallagata to the shore.
  • Follow Ægisíða towards Skerjafjörður, then return by the same route.

The surface is paved, wide and lit, with a gentle profile. It is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles; walkers, runners and cyclists share the route. Public toilets and bins are available on the trail.

Getting there

From central Reykjavík, walk west through Vesturbær to Hofsvallagata, or use a bicycle for a quick link to the shore. The pool car park is the practical starting point for drivers. Ægisíða also connects into Reykjavík’s longer coastal path network, so it works well as a short out-and-back or a section of a longer waterside ride.

Timing and conditions

The path is open year-round and lighting extends its usefulness outside daylight hours. It is an exposed shore: wind can be much sharper here than among the streets of central Reykjavík. Bring an outer layer, especially if stopping at the benches or walking after a swim at Vesturbæjarlaug.
