Töölönlahti Park
Töölönlahti Park, officially Töölönlahdenpuisto, is an 8.8-hectare inner-city park in central Helsinki, between Finlandia Hall and the shore of Töölönlahti Bay. It is a green pause amid Helsinki’s principal cultural buildings.
What this park is
Töölönlahti Park is the landscaped park immediately east of Finlandia Hall and Villa Hakasalmi. Its northern edge reaches Töölönlahti Bay; Töölönlahdenkatu forms the southern boundary. Though it sits in the centre, the park is a distinct place rather than the whole bayfront.
Its current form dates from 2016 and was intended as an interim park while longer-term plans were developed. That explains its flexible, open layout: lawns, planted areas, play and activity spaces, seating, and room for temporary uses rather than a formal historic garden.
Read the layout
A broad curved route, the toimintakaari or activity arc, organizes the park. Follow it to cross the grounds between the Finlandia Hall side and the buildings along Alvar Aallon katu.
- North: the park meets the bay shore and the quieter waterfront landscape.
- West: Finlandia Hall and Karamzininranta lie alongside the park.
- East: small planted pocket gardens sit by the newer blocks.
- South: connections lead toward Töölönlahdenkatu and the city-centre cultural district.
Do not confuse it with Makasiinipuisto, the separate park between Oodi Central Library and Helsinki Music Centre.
What to look for
The park was designed as a place to sit, move through and use, not as a collection of monuments. Its mix of mature-scale trees, lawns and ornamental planting gives the open ground definition against the large cultural buildings around it.
At the southern end, recent summer-park measures have added planting and flexible activity features, including a bicycle hub and a dance platform. Elsewhere, the activity arc links a playground, outdoor exercise facilities and places to sit. The city has also used the open lawn for event activity and flower-meadow planting; these elements can change as the park plan develops.
For a short visit, enter from the Finlandia Hall side, walk the arc north toward the water, then continue along the bayfront or return through the park. It works particularly well as the green link between a visit to Finlandia Hall and central Helsinki.
Access and current works
The park is reached easily on foot from the central station and from the cultural buildings around Kansalaistori. Cycle routes run along Karamzininranta and Töölönlahdenkatu.
Redevelopment is planned in stages. Work around Karamzininranta is scheduled from late June 2026 into July 2027, so expect changed walking or cycling arrangements near Finlandia Hall. The park itself is also subject to ongoing planning, with the aim of retaining its green character and improving connections and facilities.
Best use
Come for a break between museums, concerts or library time rather than for a destination-length excursion. The park is most legible in daylight, when its planted spaces, bay edge and relationship with Finlandia Hall are clear. In summer, allow time to sit; in colder months, use it as a direct, open route between the waterfront and the centre.
