Oodi, Helsinki Central Library

Oodi is Helsinki’s central library on Kansalaistori, directly opposite Parliament House and a short walk from the main railway station. Its spruce, glass and steel building is both an architectural landmark and a free public place to read, work and make things.

Orientation

Oodi stands at Töölönlahdenkatu 4 on Kansalaistori, opposite Parliament House. The location is deliberate: Helsinki’s national legislature faces a building designed for public access, study and everyday civic life.

The library has entrances from Kansalaistori, Eero Erkon katu and Töölönlahdenkatu. The railway station, Rautatientori metro station and several tram stops are close by, making this an easy stop while exploring central Helsinki.

Read the building

ALA Architects designed Oodi as three very different public levels held together by a sweeping wooden form. The exterior combines a spruce facade with glass and steel; the long curved frontage is the building’s defining view from the square.

  • Ground floor: an active lobby with library services, a café, event space and Kino Regina cinema.
  • Second floor: enclosed rooms for work, meetings, learning, games, studios and the Urban Workshop.
  • Third floor: the light-filled reading level, known as Book Heaven, with books, children’s areas, reading places, cafés and the Citizens’ Balcony.

Take the escalator or lift all the way to the top even if you are not borrowing books. The upper level is where the architecture opens out, with broad city views from the balcony.

What to use

Oodi is a working public library rather than a museum building. You can settle in with a book, use the reading and study areas, or move through the ground-floor lobby without an admission charge. Public Wi-Fi is available.

The second floor is the practical counterweight to the book collection: it contains workstations, meeting rooms, recording and production studios, game rooms and maker facilities. Some rooms and workstations are bookable; availability and access conditions vary by space. Kino Regina operates as a cinema, so screenings have separate tickets.

Visit well

Normal opening hours are Monday–Friday 08:00–21:00 and Saturday–Sunday 10:00–20:00. Hours change on public holidays.

Arrive through the Kansalaistori entrance for the strongest exterior approach and a direct view back across the square towards Parliament. For the quieter library experience, head upstairs rather than lingering in the busy lobby. Lifts serve the building, and the entrances are designed for accessible access.

Cyclists will find racks by every entrance; the nearest paid car parks are P-Eliel and Aimo Park Finlandia. Only guide dogs are permitted inside.
