Orientation

Concepcion sits on the northeastern coast of Panay, about 97 km from Iloilo City, with the Visayan Sea immediately east. It is a municipality rather than a single resort strip: the mainland town centre is the practical base, while its territory also includes island barangays offshore.

Fishing is fundamental to local life, and Concepcion Fish Port is the clearest place to see that economy at work. The port was rehabilitated and modernised in 2024 after severe damage from Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

The fish port is a trading place, not a staged food hall. Its rebuilt facilities include a raised platform, fish market, improved drainage, parking and lighting. Work around the port follows the catch, so the selection changes from day to day.

For the most direct meal, buy seafood by weight at the market and cross to a paluto or dampa stall. Paluto means the customer supplies the seafood and selects how it is cooked. Ask what is available and settle the cooking method and charge before handing over the purchase.

• Tangigue: narrow-barred Spanish mackerel; grilling (sugba) is a documented option.
• Pusit: squid, including small squid when in season; local stalls may prepare it adobo-style.
• With the meal: garlic fried rice, tomato, egg and sharp langgaw vinegar are fitting Iloilo-style accompaniments.

Timing and food practicalities

Go in the morning for the market trade. There is no dependable fixed landing hour: boats and the day’s conditions determine the supply. Choose what looks best rather than arriving with a rigid species list.

The port’s advantage is distance: market purchase, road crossing and cooking stall are all close together. Bring cash and expect a functional market environment—wet floors, fish handling and active vehicle movement. Wear footwear that can cope with splashes.

Coast and islands

Concepcion’s mainland faces a scattered group of islands in the Visayan Sea. Pan de Azucar is the largest, and Mount Manaphag rises at its centre. These islands are part of the municipality, but are separate destinations requiring boat arrangements; they are not a quick extension of a fish-port stop.

Keep the visit grounded in the town’s working waterfront. The rebuilt port exists because the fishery depends on the health of the surrounding sea; do not leave waste on the shore or in boats.
