Concepcion lies on the northeastern coast of Panay, within Iloilo Province. The municipality faces the Visayan Sea and includes the mainland town plus about 16 smaller associated islands. Its scale is practical rather than urban: come for a fishing community, a port market and access to the surrounding waters—not a resort strip.

The town centre is the useful base for supplies, local meals and the port. Concepcion’s fishing economy is not background scenery; it shapes the waterfront, market trade and the food on the table.

Concepcion Fish Port

The fish port is the clearest introduction to Concepcion. Rehabilitated and modernised in 2024, it has an elevated platform, improved drainage, wider parking and energy-efficient lighting. It functions as a landing and trading point for local fishing households and nearby communities.

Go in the morning to see the market at its most active. What is on sale depends on the catch, so treat species as a daily variable rather than a fixed menu. Fish and squid are regular possibilities; tangigue (narrow-barred Spanish mackerel) and pusit (squid) are familiar names to know.

The port is a working facility. Keep clear of unloading areas, do not block vehicles or fish handlers, and ask before photographing a vendor’s stall or catch.

Buy it, then have it cooked

Concepcion’s most direct food experience is paluto: choose seafood by weight at the market, then take it to a cook at a stall across the road. You supply the fish; the stall prepares it for a cooking charge.

Useful choices to ask for:

• Sugba — grilled fish; tangigue suits the low, steady heat.
• Adobo nga pusit — squid cooked in a dark, savoury adobo sauce.
• Rice and vinegar — garlic rice, tomato, egg and seasoned vinegar make a straightforward Iloilo-style breakfast alongside grilled fish.

Agree on the cooking method and price before the seafood goes to the kitchen. Freshness and portion size matter more here than an elaborate menu.

Reaching the town and waterfront

Concepcion is about 111 km by road from Iloilo City. Northern Iloilo buses and vans connect the provincial capital’s Tagbak area with towns in the fifth district; services and final drop-off points vary. In town, the compact centre and port area are easiest on foot or by short local ride.

The municipal port also links the mainland with Concepcion’s island barangays by motorised banca. Boat operations are weather-dependent, and island facilities can be limited. For a port-and-market visit, stay on the mainland; treat an island crossing as a separate, conditions-led plan.
